Freiburg vs Dortmund Analysis
Last season’s sixth-placed finishers, Freiburg, welcome in runners-up Borussia Dortmund on Friday hoping for back-to-back victories to open the Bundesliga season after their monster 4-0 opening day win over Augsburg last week.
Borussia Dortmund also got their season started off in winning fashion with a 1-0 home win against Bayer Leverkusen last Saturday, with Jude Bellingham having a standout game for the home side in that one.
Both sides have split each of their last four head-to-heads overall claiming two wins each. However, Freiburg has won both of their recent contests against Borussia Dortmund in this venue.
Life Without Haaland
Borussia Dortmund’s top scorer last season Erling Haaland has left for new pastures with a monster transfer deal to Manchester City over the summer, and that’s left a sizeable offensive hole for Dortmund to fill ahead of this season.
Haaland actually had a better goals per game ratio than Bundesliga’s No. 2 striker Patrik Schik last season at 0.92 gpg (Schik’s numbers came in at 0.89 gpg), and he played a full ten games less than Bayern Munich’s former top man Robert Lewandowski as well.
Ajax’s Sebastian Haller was originally supposed to be the man to take over Haaland’s goal-scoring duties along with Salzburg’s Karim Adeyemi, but both players are out of the lineup at time of writing: Haller through serious illness and Adeyemi through a knock he picked up against Leverkusen last weekend. So it’ll be interesting to see where Dortmund’s offensive output comes from over the next few weeks.
Freiburg Hoping For A Repeat Of History
Long-time Freiburg coach Christian Streich was no doubt a happy man last weekend as his Freiburg side enjoyed their joint-best start to a Bundesliga campaign in club history.
They’ll be hoping for more of the same this week as they host Borussia Dortmund in Europa-Park Stadion for the second-straight season in a Match Day 2 encounter.
Last year’s game resulted in a 2-1 victory for Freiburg and the hosts will no doubt be hoping for more of the same here on Friday.
Freiburg vs Dortmund Prediction
We’re looking towards taking the under in this one on Friday as Dortmund’s offensive woes continue.
While Dortmund struggled to get going last week, they were competent on defense, allowing just 1.24 xG to Bayer Leverkusen last week, a team that contains one of the league’s best out-and-out strikers in Patrick Schik.
Freiburg, for their part, held a poor Augsburg team to just 0.59 xG and neither team will want to get in a shootout here with both teams aiming for Champions League football next season.
The total is floating anywhere between 3 and 3.25 right now, so make sure and grab that 3.25 at around -145 for this game as it’s unlikely we see four goals in this one, in our opinion.
Take the under 3.25 goals in the German Bundesliga matchup between Borussia Dortmund and Freiburg on Friday.
