Borussia Monchengladbach vs Hertha Berlin Betting Preview

WagerTalk soccer handicapper Kevin Dolan shares his thoughts on Friday’s Borussia Monchengladbach vs Hertha Berlin showdown in the German Bundesliga. Over their last nine head-to-head meetings, each team has won three games with three draws mixed in, so there hasn’t been much separation between these two squads.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Hertha Berlin Analysis

With just one point gained from their opening two matches of the season and sitting down in 15th in the Bundesliga table, Hertha Berlin will no doubt be hoping to avoid a second consecutive relegation playoff game, or potentially worse, as they look to rebound with a positive performance against Borussia Monchengladbach here on Friday.

Monchengladbach, for their part, has started off the season in some good form, but will no doubt be disappointed about not taking all three points against Schalke over the weekend, giving up a late 92nd-minute penalty to the home side in that one.

Trouble in the Hertha Camp

After signing a new contract with the club just last year, long-standing goalkeeper Rune Jarstein is reportedly on his way out the door at Hertha after an altercation with goalkeeping coach Andreas Menger in a training session prior to their game against Eintracht Frankfurt over the weekend.

That leaves former backup Oliver Christensen on goalkeeping duties for this one and Hertha Berlin also in the market for a new first-team goalie which is less than ideal preparation for what already looks like a tough season ahead for the men from the capital.

Marcus Thuram In Red-Hot Form

While Borussia Monchengladbach will no doubt be annoyed in the manner in which they gave up Saturday’s late penalty to Schalke, one silver lining for them is the form Marcus Thuram is in right now, netting five goals and one assist over just his last three starts.

The stats back up those numbers as well, not only in terms of Thuram’s goal-scoring form right now but also Monchengladbach’s overall form in general as well, with ‘Die Fohlen’ currently ranking fourth in the league in overall offensive xG this season.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Hertha Berlin Prediction

Marcus Thuram has scored after the hour mark in both of his goals this season and four of all Monchengladbach’s five goals this year have arrived after the half-time mark, so we could see some value on taking Hertha Berlin early in this one.

Hertha Berlin have allowed just one first-half goal across each of their two Bundesliga games this season, including grabbing the opening goal in one of them as well, so while we do expect Borussia Monchengladbach to grind out the win here, we like Hertha Berlin to cover early.

Take Hertha Berlin on the +0.5 first half handicap line here on Friday or alternatively, take a flyer on the Draw-B. Monchengladbach HT-FT prop (Draw at half time and Borussia Monchengladbach to be winning at full time) at a massive +350 as well.
