Toledo Rockets Helmet

Toledo vs UMass Betting Preview

UMass and Toledo were briefly conference foes in the MAC, and if conference realignment continues, may find themselves in the same league once again in the near future. But for now, the Minutemen and Rockets will meet in a non-conference game on Saturday, with Toledo opening as a 28.5-point home favorite over the visitors from Massachusetts.

Toledo vs UMass Analysis

UMass heads into the Glass Bowl on Saturday looking to bounce back from a disappointing 32-point loss last week against Tulane.

The Minutemen actually held the ball for seven minutes longer than the Green Wave in that contest, but could do little with the extra time, averaging just 1.5 yards per play through the air in that one.

Toledo, meanwhile, secured a dominating 37-0 victory over FCS-level Long Island University last week with QB Dequan Finn going 21-of-28 through the air, but did suffer one interception in that game.

Toledo has a 5-1 record over UMass in their prior six meetings, which includes a 45-7 victory over the Minutemen in Foxboro last season.

Don Brown Returns To The Minutemen

Head coach Don Brown returns to guide the Minutemen in his first full season back in charge at Massachusetts since 2008 after being the defensive coordinator at Arizona last season.

This will be Brown’s third stint with the program after a DC role here back in ‘98-99, and again as head coach between 2004-2008.

It was actually during those five years as head coach that Brown enjoyed the best period in Massachusetts program history, reeling off a 43-19 overall record at the FCS level and making two postseason appearances as well.

Rockets Piling Up Consistent Success

2009 was the last year the Toledo Rockets had a losing season with a 5-7 record overall.

Since then, the Rockets have found consistent success in the MAC, amassing a 97-49 record overall and reaching the Bahamas Bowl last year.

With a ground attack that ranked fifth in the country last season on overall yards per rush attempt, don’t expect that winning mentality to go away anytime soon either.

Toledo vs UMass Prediction

We like Massachusetts in this one catching the full +28.5 points as we expect a slightly closer game than many people are anticipating on Saturday.

While UMass was poor on defense last season, they did face a tough schedule against some very good teams, and yet still ranked in the mid-tier in the FBS (64th) on overall opponent red-zone scoring percentage.

The Minutemen also put up 13 rushing first downs last week against Tulane, so if they can keep this game predominantly on the ground against a Toledo defense that ranked 58th on total opponent rushing yards per game last season, they have a very real chance of covering here.

Take UMass +28.5 on Saturday against Toledo.
