Syracuse vs Indiana Predictions

  • Syracuse Orange +2.5 vs Indiana Hoosiers
  • Total: 148 points
  • Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York
  • 7:00pm ET / 4:00pm PT
  • Broadcast on ESPN2

Indiana travels to New York to play the Syracuse Orange on Tuesday night. Indiana is undefeated this season but they have yet to play a road game. Syracuse came into the season with high expectations but have been a bit disappointing so far this young season.

The Hoosiers have not had the toughest schedule. Their best win came over St. Johns and they have a few key injuries. Trey Galloway is out and Robert Phinisee also likely will not play in this matchup. Indiana shoots very well from the field and are a good 3 point shooting team. Indiana’s free throw shooting leaves a little to be desired, as they only shoot 66.9% while the national average is 70%. They also play ferocious defense, limiting opponents to just 36% field goal shooting while the national average is 49%. Syracuse has struggled against similar defenses so far this season. Forward Trayce Jackson-Davis is averaging 20.5 points per game and should be able to have success as Syracuse plays a zone defense. Whether Xavier Johnson can hit 3s with proficiency should be the difference in the game for Indiana’s offensive production.

Syracuse lost big to Auburn, Colgate and VCU but managed to beat Arizona State. They are somewhat a Jekyll and Hyde team, but more Jekyll than Hyde. The only injury for Syracuse is Bourama Sidibe so they should be fresh and ready for this one, but Indiana is better than anyone they have played (except maybe Auburn) and against this stifling defense they may struggle. The good news is they have five players who average double digit scoring, so they are good at spreading the ball and finding the open man. The bad news is they have no depth. They need deep shooter Cole Swider to hit 3’s, which he has not been able to do yet this season, shooting only 27%. Syracuse is one of the elite free throw shooting teams in the country, they shoot 78.6% from the charity stripe.

In conclusion, Syracuse’s lack of depth and loose defense should be their undoing. They allow opponents to shoot 54% from the field and Indiana’s forwards should be able to find space in their zone defense. On the other hand, Indiana is 0-5 against the spread in their last 5 and being on the road for the first time might slow them down. The current line is Indiana -2.5 with 148 as the total.

I would look to play the Under 148, as I do not think Syracuse will score and Indiana might be slowed down being on the road. If Indiana gets a lead they are not a good free throw shooting team either, which could contribute to a lower score.

Syracuse vs Indiana Analysis from The GoldSheet

The Hoosiers arrive at the Carrier Dome undefeated as they look to increase the Big Ten’s lead on the ACC after Illinois and Iowa posted Monday night wins. Trayce Jackson-Davis comes off a 43-point game to lead the Hoosiers past Marshall, keeping Mike Woodson perfect in his first season coaching his alma mater. The veteran coach was still playing in the NBA the only time Syracuse has lost to Indiana, back in the 1987 Championship game that Keith Smart played hero in at the buzzer. The Orange have won the six other meetings against IU and but are a home underdog here by roughly three points.

A 3-3 start has unveiled a pretty clear pattern as to what the Orange are bringing to the table this season. SU isn’t likely to win the rebounding battle or shut you down with its zone, but when the offense is working and the 3-ball is falling, the team should be dangerous. A 1-2 showing down in Nassau brought saw a 97-point outburst in a win over Arizona State and double-digit losses to VCU and Auburn, who feasted on turnovers and clamped down on the perimeter. Indiana edged St. John’s 76-74 for its best win so far and is leaving the comforts of Assembly Hall for the first time.

Including its Big Ten Tournament setback, last season’s Hoosiers closed the season out with five straight losses outside Bloomington. The Hoosiers haven’t shot it well either but have defended the 3-ball decently, surrendering a .334 clip. The Orange shoot it better than 38 percent, ranking just outside the top-50. ‘Cuse center Jesse Edwards, a bit player the past two seasons, and Villanova transfer Cole Swider, will be the x-factors here since they’ll have to find a way to contain Jackson-Davis.
