Toronto Blue Jays vs New York Yankees Analysis
The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays begin a three game series between American League East divisional rivals from the Rogers Centre. The Blue Jays managed to split a four game set in Tampa Bay against the Rays after going down 0-2 in the series.
The Yankess destroyed the Boston Red Sox, sweeping all four games by the combined score of 19-13. New York opens the series with an 8.5 game lead over Toronto and only 10 games to play, however the Jays still have control of a Wild Card spot.
New York will send the righty Luis Severino to the bump while Toronto counters with the 31 year old Kevin Gausman. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM EST/4:07 PST.
Yanks Look To Lock Up Division
The New York Yankees improved to an impressive 94-58 on the season after completing a four game sweep over the Boston Red Sox with a 2-0 victory on Sunday. Nestor Cortes blanked the Red Sox through six innings of rain shortened baseball.
Aaron Judge went 1-2 with a double and catcher Jose Trevino had the games only RBI. The Bronx Bombers officially clinched a playoff spot over the weekend and have the division in their sights next.
They lead the American League East by 8.5 games witn only 10 games to play. New York has one the top lineups in the majors as rank 4th with a .754 OPS. The 28 year-old righty Luis Severino gets the nod on Monday evening.
Severino is 6-3 with a 3.36 ERA and 1.04 WHIP on the season. He had faced the Jays for times this season with 1-0 record across 14.2 innings with 8 runs allowed on 10 hits and 8 walks.
Jays Working For Wild Card
The Toronto Blue Jays don’t have much of a chance to catch the New York Yankees in the AL East but they control their own destiny in the Wild Card race. The Jays improved to 86-67 with a 7-1 triumph over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.
Ross Stripling tossed five innings of one run baseball while scattering six hits. Leadoff man George Springer went 3 for 4 with three RBI while hitting his 22nd and 23rd home runs of the season. Toronto currently sits 8.5 games back in the division but 2.5 games ahead in the Wild Card race.
The Blue Jays are one of few teams with an offensive attack similar to New York as they rank 3rd with a .757 team OPS. Kevin Gausman has been rock solid this season with 12-10 record, 3.32 ERA and 1.24 WHIP.
Gausman has great control with a career low 3.9 walk percentage. He has faced the Yanks twice this season and is 1-1 with two runs allowed on 10 hits across 12.2 innings of work.
Toronto Blue Jays vs New York Yankees Prediction
The Toronto Blue Jays enter the game slightly favored at home with a -130 money line while the New York Yankees sit at +110 with a total of 7.5. This total projects a pitchers duel but these lineups are too strong for a number this low.
These lineups have been smashing the ball as the Yankees have a .882 OPS in their last 12 games while Toronto has a .763 team OPS over their last 15 games. The over is 6-1 in New Yorks last 6 and 7-1 in the Jays last 8 games.
The Jays bullpen has been in bad form the past few weeks and the Yankees bullpen is plagued by injuries. Kevin Gausman home splits are hard to overlook with .308 OBA and .817 OPS at home. It makes sense considering Rogers Centre is hitters paradise. Let’s Smash the over on this low number of 7.5.
Prediction: Over 7.5 -115
