Cleveland Guardians vs Tampa Bay Rays Analysis
The Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians meet for the rubber match of a three game series from Progressive Field on Thursday evening.
The Guardians evened up the series with a 2-1 victory in extra frames last night. The Rays continue to fight for Wild Card positioning while the Cleveland has already locked up the American League Central.
Reliever turned starter Jeffrey Springs gets the nod for Tampa Bay while the Guardians counter with the righty Cal Quantrill. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 PM EST/3:10 PST.
Guardians Prevail In Extras
The Cleveland Guardians took home a 2-1 victory last night on a Amed Rosario single in the 10th inning. Triston McKenzie led the way with a six inning performance where he allowed only one run on three hits while striking out six.
Third baseman Gabriel Arias provided the only other run with his first home run of the season. At 86-78 on the season, the Guardians have locked up the AL Central with no chance of moving up in playoff positioning.
The have relied heavily on their pitching this season as they rank 6th in team ERA at 3.52. However they have picked up their run production recently as they up the 4.65 runs/game in September compared to 4.32 on the season.
The 27 year-old righty Cal Quantrill toes the rubber on Thursday evening. Quantrill is 14-5 on the season with a 3.49 ERA and 1.24 WHIP.
He held the Texas Rangers to one run across six innings in his last outing but has some concerning underlying numbers. He has a xERA of 4.43, over run higher than his ERA, meaning regression could be due.
Springs Looks To Have A Successful Fall
The Tampa Bays Rays record fell to 85-70 on the season as they lost 2-1 in the 10th inning last night. Tyler Glasnow looked solid in his first action in nearly 14 months with three innings of one run baseball.
Ji-Man Choi went 2 for 3 with a double and run scored. The Rays currently occupy the 2nd Wild Card spot, they are 1.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for home field advantage in the first round.
The Rays have also done it with pitching as they rank 4th in team ERA at 3.40. Their lineups has averaged only 4.21 runs a game with only three players with 10+ home runs.
The Rays have churned out another strong starter in the southpaw Jeffrey Springs. Springs has a 9-4 record with a pristine 2.56 ERA and 1.10 WHIP to go with 136 strikeouts in 126.1 innings of work. He faced the Guardians back in late July allowed three runs in only five innings pitched.
Cleveland Guardians vs Tampa Bay Rays Prediction
We have a virtual pick’em with the money line set at -115 for the Tampa Bay Rays and -105 for the Cleveland Guardians with a total of 6.5 It makes sense to have back-to-back extra innings games as these teams stack up so evenly.
They have two of the best staffs in the game and neither is a juggernaut on offense. They are only separated by two games and the standings could end up facing each other in the post-season.
With a total this low it won’t take much to go up and over the total. The Rays hitters will be locked in and the Guardians are batters are heating up. Let’s make a small play on the over 6.5.
Prediction: Under 6.5 -110
