Shakhtar Donetsk vs RB Leipzig Analysis
Shakhtar Donetsk scored a surprise 4-1 victory over their German hosts back in matchday 1 in this competition and RB Leipzig have the chance to return the favor here, with anything bar a defeat sending them through to the knockout round of this season’s tournament early next year.
Shakhtar however need a win here in order to progress but have guaranteed themselves European football this year regardless, sitting four points ahead of Celtic in the third place Europa League spot.
That 4-1 meeting back in September remains the two teams’ only previous meeting in European competition in their respective histories.
RB Leipzig Remain Shaky On The Road
Despite a red-hot recent run for RB Leipzig in which they’ve won seven of their last nine matches overall and have scored at least twice in eight of those nine matches as well, their road form this season has been anything but ‘hot’.
The Red Bulls’ have only registered two wins on the road since April, those coming against Celtic and German minnows Teutonia Ottensen in the DFB Pokal, for a poor return of W2, D5, L6 overall and the league’s third-worst road record this season to boot.
Draws Have Hampered Shakhtar’s Progression
Shakhtar have been in some pretty good form themselves heading into this game, with Real Madrid the only team to beat them over their last 14 competitive games in all.
Draws have been the one major stumbling block for Shakhtar over this campaign so far, letting in an own goal against Celtic back in September, Real Madrid scoring a 94th equalizer against them a few weeks later and Celtic again securing a draw in results that have drained Shakhtar’s total points tally overall despite them playing well in this year’s competition.
Shakhtar Donetsk vs RB Leipzig Prediction
Shakhtar Donetsk will progress to the knockout round with a win here as they own the better head-to-head record against Leipzig, so have little to lose here by pressing the action as they’re guaranteed at least third place in the group and a shot at Europa even if they fall short.
That could lead to goals in this one and with the total set at a straight 3 ahead of this one at the time of writing, going off at plus money also, that’s the way we’re going to look in this one.
Nine of RB Leipzig’s last eleven Champions League away games have featured at least three goals and we’re predicting another shootout on Wednesday against Shakhtar Donetsk over in Poland also.
