France vs Australia Betting Prediction : Analysis

France will begin its championship defense in a very similar way it kicked off its 2018 campaign. France defeated Australia 2-1 in the group stage of the last tournament in a match that was much closer than expected.

The names on the front of the jersey will be the same, but several names on the back will be different, notably on the French side.

2022 Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema is out with a quad injury. Defensive midfield specialist N’Golo Kante underwent hamstring surgery. Paul Pogba has been out all season with a knee injury. RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku was poised for a breakout campaign, but will also miss the tournament after suffering a knee injury in training.

Those injuries prevented Didier Deschamps from scheduling a warmup match this past week, which means the last time the French were on the field for a competitive match was for the Nations League where they recorded just one win from six matches and finished behind Denmark and Croatia.

The Playoff Survivors

Australia has plenty of high-pressure experience under its belt already after traveling the playoff route through qualifying against United Arab Emirates and Peru.

Most of the Socceroos’ lineup plays in the Australian A-League, but they do have some European players in the Scottish Premiership, plus a few in the England Championship and Italian Serie A.

The French didn’t do themselves many favors in the media over the last week, as they provided some bulletin board material for Australia. When asked if he was familiar with any of the Australian players, French defender Ibrahima Konate said, “No, not at all. I don’t know any of them.”

When asked a similar question, French striker Olivier Giroud responded, “I don’t know if they have exactly the same squad as 2018. To be honest with you we have not yet studied the team…”

France vs Australia Prediction

Few pundits gave Australia much of a chance in that 2018 contest, and not many are giving the Socceroos much of a shot this time around, either.

In my opinion, not enough is being made about the French skipping their last warmup match. While nearly every other team in the tournament got some competitive action under its belt, the French were more concerned about adding another name to their injury list.

Granted, the Asian qualifying route is not nearly as treacherous as the European route, but the Australians only lost one out of ten matches by more than one goal. If the Socceroos can net one goal like they did in 2018, I think it becomes highly unlikely France covers the -1.5 goal spread. Take Australia +1.5 (EV) in Tuesday’s World Cup action.
