After what was a red-hot start to the season for the New Jersey Devils to start 2022-23, the emergency brake has definitely been pulled on the money train as the Devils have now lost six straight games heading into Wednesday’s matchup against the Florida Panthers.
The Panthers themselves come off a lopsided 7-3 loss against Boston on Monday night also and have struggled to put any type of momentum together this season, winning five and losing five since the start of the month.
These two teams played their first game of this year’s series last Saturday, with Florida coming out on top 4-2 in New Jersey.
Where Has It All Gone Wrong For New Jersey?
The Devils were by far the most profitable team in the league until just a few weeks ago, even over Boston, but while still in the black overall for bettors, have since tumbled down to 4th in the profitability stakes, so where has it all gone wrong for the Devils across the month of December?
Giving up an average of 4.00 goals per game to opponents over their last six starts with four of those six losses coming via multiple-goal margins as well is definitely among the chief culprits as the Devils look to fix a defense that still ranks #1 in the league in defensive xGA this season.
Panthers Look For More Consistency
It’s been a frustrating season for the Florida Panthers so far as they look to tone down their offensive outbursts from last season and work on a defense that got them swept in last season’s Conference Second-Round playoff series against Tampa Bay.
However, the Panthers may need to ease up on the brake pedal regarding offense as going forward they remain one of the most electric teams in the entire league, generating the #1 expected goals, scoring chances, and high-danger chances out of any team this season.
