New York Yankees 2023 Season Preview
The Yankees are a rare team where expectations are win a World Series Championship or the season was a failure.
The Yankees have not won the World Series since 2009 and the fans are getting restless. As usual the Yankees were busy in the off-season and added Carlos Rodon to their starting rotation.
That is an obvious improvement and it makes the Yankee starting rotation of five one of, if not THE, best in MLB.
With Rodon added the Yankees now have two legitimate AL Cy Young candidates (Rodon, Cole) followed by Nestor Cortes (12-4, 2.44 ERA), Luis Severino (7-3, 3.18 ERA) and Domingo German (2-5, 3.61 ERA).
Severino only pitched 101 innings last season and that should increase in 2023 to bolster the starting pitching even better than last year. Overall a very good rotation got better for 2023.
2023 New York Yankees Infield
The infield has a few deficiencies. For example, the shortstop starter is not decided as of the start of March.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa was the starter last year and appears to be the likely starter there for 2023, but prospect Oswald Peraza is looking very nice and could very likely usurp that spot before the all-star break.
Kiner-Falefa has proven to be unreliable on defense and his hitting regressed a bit in 2022 (.261 BA vs. .264 career). Peraza hit .306 in very limited (49 ABs) action and has been tearing the cover off of the ball in Spring action.
His defense could only be an upgrade from Kiner-Falefa. Peraza is a true shortstop but also has the versatility to play second base.
Third base is another position that was a bit of a sore spot for the Yankees in 2022. Josh Donaldson hit just .222 compared to his career .265 and only hit 15 home runs in 478 at bats.
This can only improve either by Donaldson having a better season or the Yankees upgrading the position at the trade deadline. Overall, the infield should be slightly upgraded at shortstop and third base in 2023.
2023 New York Yankees: Notable Improvements
– Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton seems to always be injured and only hit .211 in 2022. Stanton is a good pure hitter and this can only improve.
– The Aroldis Chapman experiment is done. The closer will be Clay Holmes or Jonathan Loaisiga. My sense is that Holmes will take it and run with it. Overall the closer spot is improved.
– Although it is another team, the Yankee “thorn in the side” Houston Astros no longer have AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander in their rotation. So, addition by subtraction, the Yankees improve their chances of a pennant.
– Domingo German was bad in 2022. I am actually not a fan, this #5 rotation spot could be improved either by him playing better (not likely) or an addition at the trade deadline (likely).
New York Yankees 2023 Season Betting Predictions
Last year the Yankees won 99 games. With improvements to the SS, 3B and closer spots I see no reason why they should not win more games than last year.
I do not think Aaron Judge will be as productive as he was last year, but the decline should not be huge. When I was a scout we had a saying, “You can never have too much pitching.”
The reason is because if you can hold the other team to 0 you never lose. The Yankees have improved their pitching and defense.
– Over 94.5 wins (Pinnacle) – I see no reason why the Yankees would win less games in 2023 and the book has the number 4.5 games less.
– AL East winner – I do not see odds for this bet but it will probably be -150 or worse. I would take it.
– AL pennant winner (+380 Pinnacle) – With the Astros getting weaker (even if slightly) this is a good bet.
– Cole or Rodon for AL Cy Young winner is worth a small play but pitcher injuries are always a worry, so I tend not to bet starting pitcher future awards.
Those are the bets I will be playing for the Yankees and how I see their season shaping up.
