The History of the Seattle Seahawks: A Journey from Expansion to Excellence

The Seattle Seahawks are one of the most successful and popular franchises in the National Football League (NFL). Founded in 1976, they have won one Super Bowl and three NFC championships. They have also produced some of the greatest players and coaches in the history of the sport, such as Steve Largent, Cortez Kennedy, Walter Jones, Shaun Alexander, Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll.

However, the Seahawks have also faced many challenges and hardships throughout their long and storied history, such as relocation threats, losing seasons and controversies. This article will explore the history of the Seattle Seahawks, from their humble beginnings to their present-day excellence.

The Early Years: 1976-1982

The Seattle Seahawks were founded in 1976 by Lloyd Nordstrom, a businessman and part of the Nordstrom family that owned the department store chain. Nordstrom bought the franchise for $16 million and named it after a fan contest. The Seahawks joined the NFL as an expansion team and played their home games at the Kingdome.

The Seahawks struggled to be competitive in their first few seasons. They finished with a 2-12 record in their inaugural season and a 5-9 record in their second season. They also switched conferences twice, from the NFC West to the AFC West in 1977 and back to the NFC West in 2002. They also had difficulty finding a franchise quarterback, as they tried several options such as Jim Zorn, Dave Krieg and Kelly Stouffer.

The Seahawks also had some bright spots in their early years. They drafted some future Hall of Famers such as Steve Largent, Cortez Kennedy and Kenny Easley. They also hired Chuck Knox as their head coach in 1983. Knox led the team to their first playoff appearance and first division title in 1983. He also won the NFL Coach of the Year award twice with the Seahawks.

The Middle Years: 1983-1998

The Seattle Seahawks reached their peak of success in the mid-1980s under the leadership of Knox and Largent. They won three AFC West titles in 1983, 1984 and 1988. They also reached the AFC Championship Game in 1983, where they lost to the Los Angeles Raiders 30-14. Largent was also a dominant force on offense, setting several NFL records for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He was also named to seven Pro Bowls and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995.

The Seahawks entered a period of decline after their last division title in 1988. They failed to make the playoffs for nine consecutive seasons between 1989 and 1997. They also struggled to find a consistent head coach after Knox left in 1991. They tried several options such as Tom Flores, Dennis Erickson and Mike Holmgren, but none of them could lead the team to glory.

The Seahawks also faced some challenges and disappointments in this era. They moved out of the Kingdome in 1999 and played at Husky Stadium until 2002. They also had to compete with other teams for fans and media attention in Seattle, such as the Mariners, who reached the MLB playoffs four times between 1995 and 2001; and the SuperSonics, who reached the NBA Finals in 1996.

The Seahawks also had some controversies and scandals in this era. One of them was the “Boz” incident in 1987, when Brian Bosworth, a highly touted rookie linebacker, was run over by Bo Jackson of the Raiders on a nationally televised game. Bosworth never lived up to his hype and retired after two seasons due to injuries. Another controversy was the “Poison Pill” incident in 2006, when Steve Hutchinson, a star offensive lineman, left the Seahawks for the Minnesota Vikings after signing a contract that contained a clause that made it impossible for the Seahawks to match.

The Seahawks also had some bright spots in this era. They drafted some future stars such as Walter Jones, Shawn Springs, Joey Galloway and Shawn Alexander. They also hired Holmgren as their head coach and general manager in 1999. Holmgren turned around the fortunes of the franchise by making smart personnel decisions and developing Matt Hasselbeck as a franchise quarterback.

The Recent Years: 1999-Present

The Seattle Seahawks returned to prominence in the early 2000s under the leadership of Holmgren and Hasselbeck. They won four consecutive NFC West titles between 2004 and 2007. They also reached their first Super Bowl in 2005, where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-10 in Super Bowl XL. Alexander was also a dominant force on offense, winning the NFL MVP award in 2005 after rushing for 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns.

The Seahawks entered another period of decline after their last division title in 2007. They failed to make the playoffs for two consecutive seasons in 2008 and 2009. They also struggled to find a consistent head coach after Holmgren left in 2008. They tried several options such as Jim Mora Jr., Carroll and Dan Quinn, but none of them could lead the team to glory.

The Seahawks returned to glory in the late 2010s under the leadership of Carroll and Wilson. They won three NFC West titles between 2013 and 2016. They also won their first Super Bowl in 2013, when they defeated the Denver Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII. Wilson was named the MVP of the game after throwing for 206 yards and two touchdowns. The Seahawks also had one of the best defenses in NFL history, led by the “Legion of Boom” secondary, which featured Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Byron Maxwell.

The Seahawks have remained one of the elite teams in the NFL since then, despite not reaching another Super Bowl. They have made the playoffs eight times between 2010 and 2020. They have also had some memorable games and moments in this era. One of them was the “Beast Quake” run in 2011, when Marshawn Lynch broke nine tackles on a 67-yard touchdown run against the New Orleans Saints in a wild-card playoff game. Another one was the “Fail Mary” game in 2012, when Golden Tate caught a controversial touchdown pass from Wilson on the final play of the game against the Green Bay Packers.

The Seahawks have also faced some challenges and disappointments in this era. They moved out of Husky Stadium in 2002 and played at CenturyLink Field until present. They also had to compete with other teams for fans and media attention in Seattle, such as the Sounders, who joined MLS in 2009 and won two MLS Cups in 2016 and 2019; and the Kraken, who joined NHL in 2021.

The Seahawks also had some controversies and scandals in this era. One of them was the “Deflategate” incident in 2015, when Tom Brady of the Patriots was accused of deflating footballs before a playoff game against the Colts. The Seahawks faced the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX, where they lost 28-24 on a controversial play call by Carroll that resulted in an interception by Malcolm Butler at the goal line. Another controversy was the “Holdout” incident in 2018, when Earl Thomas held out for a new contract and then suffered a season-ending injury against the Cardinals. Thomas flipped off the Seahawks sideline as he was carted off the field.

The Seahawks also had some bright spots in this era. They drafted some promising players such as Bobby Wagner, Doug Baldwin, Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf and Jamal Adams. They also hired John Schneider as their general manager in 2010. Schneider has been instrumental in building a competitive roster through savvy trades, drafts and free agency signings.

Conclusion

The Seattle Seahawks are one of the most successful and popular franchises in the NFL. They have won one Super Bowl and three NFC championships. They have also produced some of the greatest players and coaches in the history of the sport. However, the Seahawks have also faced many challenges and hardships throughout their long and storied history.

They have endured relocation threats, losing seasons and controversies. They have also had to compete with other teams for fans and media attention in Seattle. The Seahawks have shown resilience and determination in overcoming these obstacles and achieving excellence. They have also shown loyalty and gratitude to their fans and their city. The Seahawks are a team with a rich history and a bright future.
