Alycia Baumgardner vs Christina Linardatou Betting Analysis

Undisputed women’s super featherweight champion Alycia Baumgardner will not only look to defend her belts against former WBO world champion Christina Linardatou this weekend over in Detroit, but also avenge the only loss of her career so far after Linardatou won a split decision against her back in 2018.

Alycia Baumgardner has responded extremely well since that sole loss however, destroying former unified champion Terri Harper inside of four rounds over in the UK to claim the WBC strap, and edging out former Ring title holder Mikaela Mayer in a close fight in October of last year over in London as well.

That hasn’t been the case for Linardatou who since her impressive win against Baumgardner five years ago just hasn’t had the same sort of success as her rival, being extremely inactive since 2019.

That said, Linardatou has still won four of her five previous fights and pushed former undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor extremely hard down the stretch in their fight back in 2019, showing her engine when at its peak is still amongst the best in the division.

However, with just one fight, a six-rounder against unheralded Aleksandra Vujovic just over a year ago, which was Linardatou’s only fight in well over three years now, has dampened her momentum massively coming into this one and it’ll be interesting to see what the former champion still has left in the tank after taking a protracted spell out of the ring due to becoming a mother.

Baumgardner Needs To Be Switched On Throughout

While Baumgardner has been quick to point out on multiple occasions that the first fight against Linardatou was a ‘fluke’, it’s still a fight that presents some interesting style dynamics for Baumgardner that she needs to be prepared for if she doesn’t want to fall into the exact same trap as before.

Linardatou is an extremely active fighter in the ring and loves to press the action on opponents, pushing them back constantly as she looks to employ heavy shots around the guard, especially from that left side.

That high-pressure style of hers is dangerous for Baumgardner in this one who averages the fewest power shots thrown per round out of any active top women’s fighter at just 19.9 on average.

That’s a concern as Baumgardner showed in her last two fights against Mikaela Mayer and Elhem Mekhaled respectively that she looked noticeably drained down the stretch in both of those bouts, and potential gas tank issues are the last thing you would want against a fighter as relentless as Linardatou is.

Linardatou Can’t Let Baumgardner Dictate The Fight With Her Jab

While Alycia Baumgardner isn’t the most active fighter in the ring, with only former opponent Terri Harper throwing fewer punches per round than Baumgardner does, she nonetheless does possess one of the best jabs in the entire sport, landing on average 29.1 jabs per round in her fights, the most out of any active women’s boxer.

If Linardatou allows Baumgardner to dictate this fight from behind that jab and can’t close the range quickly enough on her as she did in their first fight, then this could well turn into a long night’s work for Linardatou on Saturday as she constantly plays catch-up throughout.

Alycia Baumgardner vs Christina Linardatou Expert Prediction

While Christina Linardatou’s high-pressure style will always cause problems to an efficient, low-volume power puncher like Alycia Baumgardner, Baumgardner has improved enough, and Linardatou regressed enough through inactivity, for me to be comfortable picking Baumgardner to get revenge on Saturday night.

Baumgardner’s defense especially has improved immeasurably since their first fight, with the Ohio native ranking only behind the great Clarissa Shields in terms of power punches landed by opponents.

That will make things extremely difficult for Linardatou in terms of her generating a sustained offense in this fight, and instead of the inside back-and-forth affair we got between these two the first time around, Baumgardner will likely dictate this one through her jab on Saturday which could see the undisputed champion run out a wide points decision winner over in Detroit this weekend.
