The History of the Washington Commanders: A New Name, A New Era
The Washington Commanders are one of the most historic and controversial franchises in the National Football League (NFL). Founded in 1932, they have won five NFL championships, three of them in the Super Bowl era. They have also produced some of the greatest players and coaches in the history of the sport, such as Sammy Baugh, Sonny Jurgensen, John Riggins, Joe Gibbs and Doug Williams. The Boston Years: 1932-1936
The Washington Commanders were founded in 1932 as the Boston Braves by George Preston Marshall, a businessman and former owner of a chain of laundries. Marshall bought the franchise for $25,000 and named it after the baseball Braves, who shared Braves Field with them.
