Washington State was 7-5 last year (plus a bowl loss) and I believe that was their ceiling outcome, given the roster makeup. Can they menace the top tier of the Pac 12 this time around (0-5 last year)?

Washington State Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Cam Ward looked more comfortable as the season went along and, in a league full of strong QB’s, I wouldn’t sleep on him improving even more.

The RB crop is deep but WR talent is down. The best of the group is a transfer from UNLV. My top area to watch offensively is the OL, which allowed 40 regular season sacks and another six in their bowl loss.

The run defense exceeded expectations last year (4.1). Both DT’s are gone, and the LB unit was hit hard by graduation as well.

Washington State has a new defensive coordinator, but he’s from Auburn, and Dickert (Head Coach) is defensive minded, so maybe they coach up the young front seven.

My projected numbers are 4.5 for the run D and 63% for the pass defense so I do see a bit of a drop. At least the top two sackers return. The kicking game looks fine.

Washington State Football 2023 Predictions, Washington State Schedule:

UCLA and Colorado replace USC and Utah on the schedule. If Washington State has stabilized then they take care of business at Colorado State, Wisconsin has revenge and a new staff, but Washington State is at home, and could make another statement.

Their 1st two conference games are home to Oregon State (great recent history) and at UCLA. In a surprise, my pre-check will focus on Washington State’s run game, which has an opportunity to be pretty good.

The game at Oregon looks tough, but they do catch the Ducks after an emotional game vs Washington, and if Oregon loses, it could set up a very favorable situation (if it’s Oregon’s 1st loss).

Washington State must avoid their own letdown when they stay on the road to face an Arizona State team that we know nothing about at this time. November road games are at Cal (highly interesting) and the finale, at Washington (tough test for Washington State’s defense).

Washington State Football Bottom Line:

If the defense does slip a bit, then the OL and run game must deliver. I like Ward, and think another 7-5 record for Washington State football is plausible.

How the various units perform early on will help me determine if Washington State can close the gap on the top teams in the Pac 12.

Washington State Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

I went 4-1 in their games a year ago, all action on their side, with the early plays all due to perceived value (Power Rated plays 3.5 or more points off my numbers).

I’ll use September data to determine any side in their host of Oregon State. Washington State is 5-18 ATS in the 2nd of two straight road games. If the game at Oregon is emotional (win or lose), then they could be vulnerable the following week at Arizona State.
