UMass vs New Mexico State Betting Analysis

How much does a team from Massachusetts and a team from New Mexico have in common? A little more than you might think.

This is the third-straight year that the Minutemen and Aggies will tangle. NMSU has won both meetings, including last year’s 23-13 victory in Amherst as a one-point road favorite.

Both of those contests occurred with both teams as independents, but the Aggies have made the move to Conference-USA for this season and beyond.

UMass Football Preview

UMass hasn’t been able to get excited about anything on the gridiron in quite some time, but Taisun Phommachanh is a name to keep an eye on. The Connecticut native is playing closer to home after starting his career at Clemson and Georgia Tech.

247Sports had Phommachanh rated as the No. 3 quarterback in the country coming out of high school where he accumulated 6,492 yards of total offense and 71 total touchdowns, and he’s not the only former ACC prospect to arrive in Amherst this summer.

Wide Receiver Mark Pope played in 34 games at Miami (Fla) before joining Coach Prime at Jackson State last season.

That duo will be tasked with turning around a UMass program that has generated one win in three of its last four seasons. The Minutemen reached the 20-point mark just twice in 11 games against FBS opposition last season.

New Mexico State Football Preview

New Mexico State used to be in a similar situation as the country’s punching bag, but Jerry Kill has orchestrated a fantastic turnaround in Las Cruces. The Aggies won seven games last season, including a win over Bowling Green in the Quick Lane Bowl.

Former San Diego State QB Diego Pavia accounted for almost 2,000 yards of total offense and caught fire at the end of last season, but there are still some question marks over which version of Pavia we’ll see in 2023: The one that torched Liberty for 339 yards and six touchdowns, or the one that completed 36.9-percent of his passes in the first five games of the season.

UMass vs New Mexico State Week 0 Prediction

We’ll likely be sitting on the sidelines for this opener, but keep an eye on how Phommachanh runs the UMass offense.

We’re not ready to jump on the Minutemen yet, but if he can build some confidence, there may be opportunities to back UMass in upcoming weeks against New Mexico, Arkansas State and others.
