Undefeated junior welterweight prospect Richardson Hitchins takes his first real step towards legitimacy in the 140lb division when he takes on experienced multiple former world title challenger Jose Zepeda over in Orlando, Florida this weekend on the DAZN card.

Hitchins, who represented his parent’s native country of Haiti at the 2016 Olympics, comes into this fight with a 16-0 record with some solid wins on his resume so far, including against savvy Dominican veteran Argenis Mendez whom he won a close split decision against at the end of 2020.

Hitchins goes into this fight as the clear -400 favorite with Zepeda coming back at a +300 at most books.

DAZN Looking For Next Breakout U.S. Star in Hitchins

After exiting the amateur ranks and signing initially with Floyd Mayweather Promotions back in 2016, Hitchins had his first professional fight in 2017 and quickly built up a solid undefeated record under the tutelage of the former P4P #1 superstar.

However, as the initial years went by, Hitchins became more and more critical of the way Mayweather was managing his career, with just three fights in two years spread across 2020 and 2021, and accused ‘Money’ of focusing too much time on his other top promotional stablemate Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis instead.

Therefore, when Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions came calling at the end of 2022, Hitchins was more than ready to jump ship, and has promised his backers huge nights ahead in the 140lb division if he’s given the right opportunities.

Zepeda Looking For One Last Tilt At A World Title Shot

After falling short for the WBO lightweight title back in 2015, and again for the WBC junior welterweight belts in both 2019 and 2022, the 34-year-old Jose Zepeda knows that time may very well be running out in terms of securing yet another world title shot in the near future.

If that’s to become any sort of reality however it has to start here on Saturday night against the highly-touted Richardson Hitchins.

Zepeda gave former unified 140 champ Jose Ramirez a world of problems in their 2019 fight over in California, with many observers feeling Zepeda did enough to edge it, with a planned rematch between the pair unfortunately never coming to fruition.

In his last world title shot back in November of last year, Zepeda landed some huge shots early on against Regis Prograis, before the Louisiana native was able to come back with some huge shots of his own, breaking down Zepeda’s defenses and eventually closing the show in the 11th round with another massive pinpoint overhand left which Zepeda was unable to recover from.

Richardson Hitchins has looked good over his career so far, but has yet to test himself against anyone near the quality of Jose Zepeda, so this should present a solid litmus test of where exactly he is on the world stage.

The other concern for Hitchins heading into this one is the power dynamic, with Zepeda being a sizeable hitter in there against a fighter in Hitchins who really hasn’t displayed all that much in the way of power across his career so far.

Zepeda has shown some serious pop in many of his most recent fights, putting Ivan Baranchyk down four times in an absolute FOTY candidate war back in 2020, and stopping Josue Vargas inside a round also.

That said, Richardson Hitchins is an incredibly smooth fighter, and Jose Zepeda, while being an incredibly experienced campaigner at this stage, does look as if he has seen better days, looking labored in his last outing against Neeraj Goyat earlier this year.
