NBA Rookie of the Year Award Betting Trends

The NBA Rookie of the Year Award is decided by a panel of writers from the United States and Canada who vote for first, second & third place and the player with the most total points wins.

The #1 overall pick has won four of the last 10 Rookie of the Year awards and top-five picks have won 16 of the last 20 awards.

Since 2000 only one player (Malcolm Brogdon 2016) has won the award without being a lottery pick. The Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets are the two only teams never win the award and they ironically met in most recent the NBA Finals.

The Golden State Warriors have won the most ROY awards with 6 and the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Clippers have each won 5. The guard position has dominated the award, winning 16 of the last 20 Rookie of the Year awards.

2024 NBA Rookie of the Year Prediction

Based on the odds, we are looking at a three-man race between Victor Wembanyama, Scoot Henderson and Chet Holmgren.

Wembanyama enters the NBA with as much hype as any player since Lebron James 20 years ago and he has averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per game in the summer league.

He’s going to make an immediate impact on both ends of the floor making him the heavy favorite to join San Antonios two previous #1 draft picks (David Robinson & Tim Duncan) in ROY honors.

However, at +120 odds there isn’t much in the way of value for a season long award future. Holmgren is the #2 draft pick from 2022 who has maintained his eligibility due to missing the entire campaign with a Lisfranc fracture.

Holmgren was a force at Gonzaga with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game but he will have to share the ball with the likes of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey and Jalen Williams.

On the other hand, the Dame Lillard trade has opened the door for Henderson to post big offensive numbers in Portland.

He already stuffed the stat sheet in the G-league with 16.5 points, 5,4 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game. Henderson does lack the size of the other two candidates, but he has the ability to be one of the top point guards in the league and we mentioned how well guards have done historically.

An injury to any one of the three could pull longshots into the running such as Brandon Miller, Cam Whitmore or even one the Thompson Twins. At this point, Henderson will be our play at +240 odds.
