Talladega Recap
I have to talk a little about Bubba Wallace here this week. I’ve busted Bubba’s balls all year (well, actually for two years now) about how bad of a driver he is. You have to give him some credit though when it comes to these Super Speedways as he hasn’t run bad at all. Bubba Wallace wins a rain shortened Talladega but the rain doesn’t matter. It still goes down as a win for Bubba here and I’d like to say congratulations to Bubba and his team, including team owner Michael Jordan who is one of my favorite basketball players of all time as I’m a North Carolina Tar Heel basketball fan.
Talladega was unpredictable as expected. We had a couple crashes before the rain hit, which took out some solid drivers. Following Bubba in the top-10 was Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, Christopher Bell, Chris Buescher, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Erik Jones and Anthony Alfredo. Props to my Life in the Fast Lane co-anchor Andy Lang, who mentioned Anthony Alfredo on the show last week as a possible longshot target.
This was the first time in history that we had a first-time winner in all three NASCAR series in the same weekend at the same track. Last time the McDonald’s car won a race was with Mr. Excitement Jimmy Spencer back in 1994. I think the last time the No. 23 car won a NASCAR race was way back in 1954 by a guy named Al Keller.
2021 NASCAR Playoff Update
Let’s talk quickly about the NASCAR Playoffs heading into the final race of the Round of 12. Denny Hamlin still sits atop the leaderboard, followed by Kyle Larson, Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch. Kevin Harvick is sitting in ninth-place, currently nine points behind Busch. Christoper Bell, William Byron and Alex Bowman round out the top-12. Byron and Bowman, and maybe even Bell, may have to win this race to advance. Harvick needs a strong run and possibly some help to sneak in.
Bank of America Roval 400 Preview
Here are my top three drivers for this week’s Bank of America Roval 400, with the top choice being no surprise.
Chase Elliott has two wins plus an additional top-10 finishes in his three races here at the Charlotte Roval. His average finish is 2.7 at this track with two first place finishes and a sixth-place finish.
Ryan Blaney has one win, plus a top-5 and an additional top-10 finish in his three races here at the Charlotte Roval. His average finish is 4.7 at this track. His worst finish here is 8th.
Kevin Harvick has one top-5 finish and two top-10 finishes in his three races here at the Charlotte Roval. His average finish is 7.7 at this track. His best finish here is third and worst finish is 11th.
My “sleeper” this week is Kurt Busch, who is available at 25-to-1 to win the race. Kurt Busch has two top-5 finishes here at the Charlotte Roval. His average finish is 9.7 at this track.
My driver to fade this week is Kurt’s brother, Kyle Busch, who has no top-10 finishes in three races here at the Charlotte Roval. His average finish here is 33.0. His best finish here is only 30th.
Bank of America Roval 400 Head-to-Head Matchup
My featured head-to-head matchup this week at the Charlotte Roval is Erik Jones over Ryan Newman. Jones has a top-5 finish here at the Charlotte Roval, while Newman has never finished in the top-10 with his average finish position of 24.7 at this track. Thanks and best of luck this weekend!
After a 3-3 overall week, I’m now documented hitting 63% for the year in College Football and NFL combined. Working on football now for this week!
