Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia Betting Analysis

Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia look to settle their amateur differences on Saturday night as the two young phenoms square off in Brooklyn this weekend in one of the most hotly anticipated fights of the year.

Both men’s amateur records finished up at three wins apiece when facing each other, so on the surface at least with so much history between the two, a 50/50 fight is expected on Saturday.

However, bookmakers have been far more clear-cut in who they view as the favorite ahead of this one, with Devin Haney entering this weekend’s contest as the prohibitive -800 favorite, with Ryan Garcia coming back at a +550.

Just More Accolades For Haney

It’s fair to say that despite being the same age, Devin Haney has made the far greater strides of the two across the last few years.

In early 2021, it was actually Garcia who looked like he was ahead of Haney, having the more notable professional victory of the two by stopping a very good Luke Campbell inside seven rounds to claim the WBC interim lightweight title.

Haney’s best win not long after that was against a faded Jorge Linares, who rocked him badly near the end of that fight, but it’s fair to say that since then, Ryan Garcia’s career has stalled badly (outside of his bank balance), while Devin Haney’s has gone into the stratosphere.

With victories against highly decorated former world champions in George Kambosos Jr., Vasily Lomachenko, and Regis Prograis, Devin Haney is now THE man in the 140lb division, and will look to cement that legacy by getting rid of his old amateur rival in statement fashion this weekend.

Garcia Seems To Lack Focus Ahead Of Mega-Fight

With that victory over Luke Campbell back in January of 2021, the world really appeared to be at Ryan Garcia’s doorstep, with by far the biggest Instagram account of any current boxer (11m+ and counting), plus thousands of adoring female admirers at every weigh-in, Garcia looked for all intents and purposes to be the new ‘Golden Boy’ face of boxing.

However, that has been as good as it’s got for Ryan Garcia over recent years, with the California native completely walking away from boxing due to mental health after that Campbell fight, and getting stopped and dropped multiple times by Gervonta Davis last year also.

Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia Expert Prediction

If you were looking for one positive ahead of this fight for Ryan Garcia, it’s that he’s looked a lot stronger since moving up to the 140lb division, stopping a very tough Oscar Duarte in his last fight and showing that if he can land clean, he has the ability to stop anybody with that fast twitch left hook of his.

That said, there are so many more negatives on Garcia ahead of this one that it’s easy to understand why the odds are the way they are for Saturday’s bout.

Firstly, their much-vaunted 3-3 amateur career saw Ryan Garcia actually give Devin Haney a standing eight count in their first meeting, leading to an easy victory for Garcia in that one.

Fast forward to their last fight back in 2015 however, and it was actually Devin Haney who (according to him at least) gave Garcia a standing eight count, with Haney openly criticizing the fact that Garcia simply never adjusted his style in fights, content to rely solely on that left hook money punch of his.

This led to Haney not only closing the gap on Garcia in the amateur ranks, but surpassing him quite rapidly also.

Secondly, that improvement has borne fruit in the professional ranks also with Haney learning on the job, no more so than against old master Vasily Lomachenko, who easily gave Haney the toughest test of his career to date.

Garcia just hasn’t fought that level of technical competition yet, and was completely exposed against Gervonta Davis the one time he did take on an elite competitor in the ring.

Finally, Garcia’s mindset. We’ve seen ‘KingRy’ already exit the sport due to mental health issues in the past, and his constant switching of trainers has done little to assure boxing fans that all is well with the young fighter.

With recent tweets about him being taken prisoner at Bohemian Grove, along with potential earthquakes destroying Hollywood in the very near future also, this is definitely NOT the sort of preparation you want to see from a fighter about to enter the most important fight of his career.

Even in a straight-up contest, Devin Haney has shown he’s far more technically proficient than Ryan Garcia over the last few years, and at 140 especially, is starting to sit down a lot more on his punches, something we saw in his last fight by sending Regis Prograis to the canvas.

However, when you add on Ryan Garcia’s recent bizarre social media behavior (with Haney calling it an act), plus Garcia’s past history of depression also, Haney has a real shot of ending this rivalry inside the distance with a statement victory in Brooklyn on Saturday.

Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia Prediction: Devin Haney by KO/TKO (+240)
