The Memorial Tournament Betting Preview

A big-time stretch of golf is upon us with two Signature Events and a Major over the next three weeks so expect to see the best players in the world littering the top of leaderboards the rest of this month.

This week is the house that Jack built. Muirfield Village always poses a difficult test for the players and is a great tune-up for next week’s U.S. Open.

After the course underwent renovations four years ago, it seems to be playing more difficult each year with last year averaging more than 73.5 per round on this stock par-72 track.

In fact, last year, Muirfield ranked as the most difficult course of the season when it came to greens in regulation as the field averaged less than 9.5 per round, meaning the best players in the world were only hitting half the greens here. That sounds like a long walk for the rest of us!

The par 3s led the way ranking as the toughest set of par 3s on Tour last season and the par-3 16th ranked as the hardest all season, and has ranked as the hardest in three out of the last seven seasons.

It is no joke. This year, they moved that tee box roughly 30 yards to the right giving a different sight line, so we will see how that affects scoring.

What else makes this a great preparation week for the U.S. Open is that the rough will measure four inches to start the week and greens will hit 13 or higher on the Stimpmeter which is brutally fast.

The course measures well over 7,500 yards though, so driver can’t be left in the bag. Even still, players will face nearly half of their approach shots at 175 yards or more, many of those coming in at well over 200.

Players need their entire bag to compete around here which is why we almost always see the cream of the crop rise in this event with some of the recent winners including Hovland, Cantlay (twice), Rahm, and DeChambeau.

Scottie Scheffler would have won last year had he been able to make anything over four days losing an average of -2.13 strokes putting per round which was dead last in the field.

He ranked 1st in SG Off the Tee, Approach and Around the Greens which is generally the recipe to win. You just can’t rank dead last in putting, which he did, and still only missed out of the playoff by one single shot.

Notable for many betting markets this week is the field is set at 73 and there is a cut down to the top-50 along with anyone within ten shots of the lead.

Finally, weather looks solid all four days. There are thunderstorms in the forecast on Wednesday which could make the opener a little softer and perhaps play the easiest of the four days, especially early tee times.

Aside from that, there is only a slight chance of some AM showers on Sunday and temperatures will be steady in the high-70s, pushing 80. Wind will be kicking at a decent 10-20 mph clip all week which is just enough to be annoying.

The Memorial Tournament Outright Winner: Viktor Hovland +1800 (Everywhere)

From Nick Borrman:

To be honest, I hate the fact that he won here last year as repeating is always a tough thing to do, but I love the way he played the last time out where he finished solo 3rd at the PGA Championship on the heels of a T24 at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Hovland reunited with his old swing coach, and he gained more than 10.5 shots ball-striking at Valhalla which is a great sign as he had clearly been struggling prior.

For as good as these guys are, finding the confidence among a slight tweak is all that is needed to turn the corner and start flushing the ball again.

While his stats aren’t great this year, we know how good he is and how locked in he can get with the way he finished last season winning the final two playoff events to win the FedEx Cup.

Hovland provides solid value in the mix of favorites this week as we saw him in the 10-1 range at the height of his run last year, and now seems like the time to jump in on the value.

The Memorial Tournament Top-20 Finish: Sungjae Im +140 (DraftKings)

Apparently, I’m putting all my eggs in the “resurgence” bucket this week as Sungjae appears like another guy on the comeback trail after a horrible start to the season.

Im opened the season with a T5 at The Sentry then when into a funk run which saw him finish inside the Top-20 just one time over his next ten starts with four missed cuts. However, most people were unaware that he was dealing with an injury during that time and the results clearly showed that.

Now, fully recovered, he has four Top-12 finishes in his last five starts including a win in Korea among a T4 at the Wells Fargo Championship and a T9 two weeks ago at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Im is always accurate off the tee and his iron game seems to be peaking heading into the summer which could spur him to another high finish this week at Muirfield.

See you next week for the U.S. Open!
