One of the hottest prospects in all of boxing returns to action this Saturday night in New York City as Top Ranks Puerto Rican sensation Xandar Zayas takes on veteran Patrick Teixeira over at the Hulu Theater in what should be a highly entertaining bout this weekend.

The 21-year-old Zayas is one of Top Ranks shining lights, and is set to make huge waves in the 154lb division moving forward, but faces a stiff test in the form of former champion-elect Patrick Teixeira.

Zayas goes into this one as the favorite priced at odds of -1600, with Teixeira coming back at a +900.

Puerto Rico Will Show Out For Zayas

The sizeable New York Puerto Rican community has been starved of success for the majority of the last few decades, with their historic rivalry against Mexico being held up solely by all-time greats Miguel Cotto and Felix Trinidad over the last twenty-plus years.

Long gone seem to be the days of hall-of-famers Carlos Ortiz, Wilfredo Benitez, and Wilfredo Gomez for Puerto Rico, but in young Xandar Zayas they seem to have another genuine elite-level talent on their hands, and with this fight coinciding with Puerto Rican National Day also, those hopes for a Puerto Rican renaissance in boxing seem to be well founded.

Teixeira Determined Not To Be A Stepping Stone

After getting blown out by the heavy-handed Curtis Stevens earlier in his career, Patrick Teixeira responded extremely well going on a run of five straight victories which culminated in a unanimous decision victory over the previously undefeated, and current middleweight contender, Carlos Adames back in 2019.

After suffering a one-sided points loss in his subsequent bout against the highly talented Brian Castano in a title eliminator, Teixeira suffered two more consecutive losses, including an outright disqualification against Paul Valenzuela.

However, with renewed focus and some recent wins under his belt, Teixeira is determined to make the most of this opportunity and put his name back in the spotlight once again with a victory over Zayas.

Xandar Zayas vs Patrick Teixeira Expert Prediction

While I’m a huge fan of Xandar Zayas personally and believe he has all the skills needed to become the next big thing in the 154lb division, this current -1200 line on a 21-year-old to get the job done against an experienced campaigner like Teixeira is just way too high.

True, Teixeira’s best days may be behind him, with his performance against Adames being almost five years ago at this point, and he’s no doubt been set up by Top Rank here for Zayas to notch yet another recognized name on his resume.

Nonetheless, Teixeira is still a highly experienced campaigner who has the ability to trouble the younger fighter should he be able to find some of his old form come fight night.

The only way we could look in this one is by taking a shot with Patrick Teixeira on Saturday, even though we believe Zayas will very likely win, as at the current odds there’s simply no value in backing the Puerto Rican prospect at these prices.
