Euro 2024 Group E Preview & Picks
Euro 2024 Group E sees former #1 world-ranked side Belgium take on Ukraine, Romania, and Slovakia in what looks set to be a fairly top-heavy group overall.
The odds for this group reflect those thoughts as well with Belgium going in as the sizeable -225 favorites to finish top, with Ukraine going in as second favorites at +400, Romania third favorites at a best price of +700, and finally, Slovakia entering as group outsiders at odds of +950.
Belgium finished top of their group during qualifying, recording no losses in their eight-game run in Group F, while Ukraine finished on the same points as Italy in Group C, and Slovakia finished as runners-up behind Portugal in Group J.
Romania were the surprise packages during qualifying however, finishing top of qualifying Group I ahead of both Switzerland and Israel, and recording no losses across that run as well, with a full five-point cushion between themselves and Switzerland in second.
Belgium Euro 2024 Odds
To Win Group E (-225) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+1600)
The ‘Golden Generation’ of Belgian football may be all but over ahead of this year’s Euros after several first-team retirements took place in the squad, but in the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, and Jeremy Doku among others, Belgium still possesses a ton of quality in its ranks.
Former RB Leipzig manager Domenico Tedesco has brought a new energy to Belgian football after their disastrous World Cup campaign 18 months ago which ended in Belgium crashing out in the group stage.
That pretty much ended any talk of the ‘Golden Generation’ but that may not necessarily be a bad thing as they seem to be going under the radar ahead of this tournament.
Ukraine Picks
To Win Group E (+400) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+10000)
The ongoing war in Ukraine has almost been a rallying cry for the national team over the past few years, enjoying their brightest period ever in international competitions.
In players such as Zinchenko, Mudryk, and Dovbyk, the Ukrainians have a ton of talent in their ranks, and showed that in their recent qualification run against both England and Italy in qualifying Group C, so they definitely shouldn’t be underestimated in this one.
That said, despite a current seven-game unbeaten streak heading into this tournament, they face a group far tighter than expected here, and the Ukrainians could struggle as a result.
Romania
To Win Group E (+700) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+20000)
One of the surprise packages of Europe across the last year or so, Romania entered qualification with relatively little fanfare but quickly showed that this is a young team with a ton of energy and vibrancy in its squad.
While the Romanians don’t boast any elite world-class talent in their ranks, that’s exactly what’s made them such a tough unit to crack, working together as a team, with their 5 goals allowed during qualifying less than half that of next-best Switzerland.
Slovakia
To Win Group E (+950) | To Win Euro 2024 Tournament (+50000)
Francesco Calzona who finished out the season with Napoli over in Serie A, has been the current Slovakian national team coach since 2022, and during that time has made them a very robust and organized unit.
That showed during qualifying with the Slovakians completely shutting out Luxembourg, Bosnia, and Liechtenstein at home, and only losing 1-0 in Bratislava to Portugal as well, the highest-scoring team out of any during qualifying.
Whether the Slovakians can bring that tight, defensive shape to a major tournament or not remains an open question, but they’ll no doubt be confident of picking up points against both Ukraine and Romania in this group.
Euro 2024 Group E Prediction
Belgium are the clear front-runners in this group for obvious reasons, and under Tedesco’s new stewardship, have not lost a game since that 2022 World Cup debacle.
However, in terms of the rest of the teams in this group, there really isn’t all that much difference, as despite Ukraine having the better overall players, it certainly isn’t enough of a difference to warrant a jump of +400 all the way up to Slovakia’s current price of +1000.
All three of these teams, Ukraine, Romania, and Slovakia are more than capable of taking points off each other in this group, so we’re happy to take the bigger price out of the three here and take Ukraine not to qualify at +200, especially with the likelihood of it being a lower scoring group meaning that third spot likely won’t have enough.
