Because of their conference independence, the Notre Dame football schedule has always generated plenty of discussion: Some years it’s one of the toughest in the country and some years it looks like a cakewalk. The Irish will certainly be tested at times this season, but generally speaking, this is a very manageable schedule for a team with lofty playoff expectations.
DraftKings has released three Games of the Year point spreads for contests involving the Irish. Our projected point spreads line up very closely with DraftKings’ opening numbers in all three of those games.

Sam Hartman provided solid quarterback play in his one season in South Bend, and Marcus Freeman is hopeful to get similar production from Duke transfer Riley Leonard. Irish fans are very familiar with the former Blue Devil because he nearly led an upset win over Notre Dame in Durham last season before suffering a leg injury on the last play of the game. Much like Hartman’s transfer from Wake Forest, Leonard’s knowledge of the ACC after playing in the league for three seasons can certainly be an asset for the Irish coaching staff with four ACC opponents on Notre Dame’s schedule.
Notre Dame Football Predictions
Notre Dame is projected to return 12 starters from last year’s squad, six on offense and six on defense. The offensive line has been a strength in South Bend for several seasons as the Irish have sent multiple o-linemen to the NFL. However, that unit appears to be the biggest question mark heading into this season.
Leonard likes to scramble and take some risks, so keeping him healthy and upright over the course of four months will be a chore. Both starting tackles from last season are gone. Freshman tackle Guerby Lambert is a top-25 prospect in the country, but he was unable to enroll early and just got to campus in June. Returning guards Pat Coogan and Rocco Spindler bring plenty of experience, but neither were effective in pass blocking last season (Coogan allowed seven QB pressures in multiple games last season).
We can try to poke holes in Notre Dame’s roster, but the bottom line is that this schedule sets up very, very nicely for them. Kyle Field will be rockin’ in Week 1 against Texas A&M, but the Aggies are welcoming a new coaching staff with only four projected returning starters from last year’s defense. After that trip to College Station, the Irish will not leave the state of Indiana until October 19. They have a bye week before hosting Florida State. The Irish will likely be playing football on/around/after New Years Day at the end of the season.
