LSU vs Florida Predictions

  • Florida Gators -12 at LSU Tigers at 12pm ET on Saturday, October 16
  • Total: 59.5 Points
  • LSU has covered the spread in three of the last four meetings with the Gators, including an outright win as a 23-point underdog last season.

This Saturday in Tiger Stadium Baton Rouge, the Florida Gators travel down to take on LSU in what could be considered a huge revenge mission from last season. In Week 15 last year LSU travelled to the Swamp as huge +23.5 point road underdogs against a team in Florida who had only lost once all season, that to a very good Texas A&M team, and were looking to challenge for playoff contention against Alabama in the following week.

That wasn’t to be however as LSU upset the applecart, beating the Gators on the road and winning by the absolute slimmest of margins with a 23 second last minute field goal being the heartbreaker for Florida. That should no doubt have Florida pumped up for this one as they to travel to Baton Rouge with a huge motivational chip on their shoulder ahead of this game.

But it’s not just motivation Florida have on their side. The Gators have been lights out on offense all year, especially in their ground game, ranking 2nd in the nation on total rushing yards (1,642), 3rd in rushing yards per game (273.7 ypg) and have put up an average of over 500 yards per game this season with Florida’s 3,000+ yards of offense actually leading the SEC this year.

In Emory Jones the Gators also have a true dual threat quarterback with 478 net rushing yards on the season so far, ranking 2nd in the nation, with the Georgia man also posting a 168.3 passing efficiency rating as well.

And it’s not just on offense where the Gators have found success this season. Florida rank 12th on opponent points per game this season, 18th on total opponent yards per play and 2nd over their last three games in opponent red zone scoring attempts per game at just 1.7 on average.

On top of this the Gators have one of the best O-lines in the country surrendering just 3 sacks all year for the 4th fewest in the FBS. They’ll travel to an LSU team who come off back to back defeats against Auburn and Kentucky respectively, but in arguably two very different performances. LSU let a huge 9 point 4th quarter lead get away against Auburn after playing well early in that game two weeks ago but were thoroughly dismantled by Kentucky in the following week who put up a whopping 330 total rushing yards on LSU in that game with a 7.3 yards per rush attempt rating to boot.

In fact LSU have one of the worst rushing defenses in the country right now giving up an average of 5.1 yards per rush attempt (106th) and have given up 9.8 rushing first downs per game this season (88th), with that rising even higher against their two most recent ranked opponents to 10.7 over their last three starts.

The Gators have twice the number of rushing first downs than LSU do on the season also (70 to 35), three times the amount of total rushing yardage (1,642 to 500) and own a 6.7 to 2.9 yards per rush attempt over the Tigers as well.
Those numbers should be like a beacon to Dan Mullen and the rest of this Florida Gators team as they enter Baton Rouge on Saturday against a weakened LSU team.

With LSU ranking 94th on total defense this season giving up an average of 436.2 yards per game, rising to 471.3 ypg over their last three starts as well, this could get ugly down in Baton Rouge on Saturday as Florida come in not only the much better team here in almost every facet of the game, but also with that huge motivational revenge angle from last season as well.

In this LSU vs Florida SEC Week 7 matchup, take the Florida Gators to win and cover by two touchdowns plus on Saturday in Baton Rouge.

LSU vs Florida Analysis from The GoldSheet

Even with the offense temporarily shedding its recent Mike Leach-mode and actually trying to establish the run last week at Kentucky when Tyrion Davis-Price gained 147 yards rushing, QB Max Johnson is no Joe Burrow, and the once-proud Tiger defense was trampled by a basic Wildcats offense that pounded LSU for 330 yards on the ground. And if there is a revenge factor, Florida has it for this game after its remaining playoff hopes went up in smoke last December in Gainesville. While we don’t like to use comparative scores, the Gators (save for their ghastly 15 penalties) might have beaten the same Kentucky that just whipsawed the Tigers. Mullen’s QB Emory Jones getting more confident in his throwing ability after burning Vandy for four touchdown passes last week as the Gators ramp up for the fast-approaching Georgia showdown.
