Michigan State College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Michigan State (MSU) has made some curious and expensive coaching hires lately. They printed money to get Mel Tucker, who was fired for cause. When can MSU become relevant again?
2024 Michigan State Spartans NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
THIS IS a massive staff upgrade, even if it pains me to say it. While MSU lost plenty of players once the coaching change was announced, many of the incoming transfers have high ceilings.
Aiden Chiles might become an electric QB.
He was just 17 when he enrolled at THE OSU, and his stat sheet was special. Smith has always fielded a solid rush attack. That may wait a season, as the RB room lacks talent. Still, I have the run O at 4.0 per carry (3.3 last year) because Smith brought with him a solid TE, a potential NFL draftee at center, and the nation’s best, or 2nd best OL coach (well known in NCAA circles).
MSU averaged a putrid 12 points per game in the Big 10. That should go up a modest amount now. Joe Rossi (Minnesota) was a solid hire at defensive coordinator. The top four tacklers return, but overall depth took a hit.
Five transfers are slated to start, four in the front seven. I’m not predicting massive change in the defensive #’s, but I do think it’s important to monitor the weekly stat sheet.
The DB’s are fairly young. Kicking is decent. The return game needs some help, but at OSU, Smith’s return units were fantastic.
Michigan State Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
QB Chiles must stay healthy, and it would help if a feature RB was found. The young secondary is also something to monitor. 3-5 is the ceiling for games 1-8, which could give this team a fighting shot at 6-6.
The current projection is 5-7, but regardless, this requires some faith they will be competitive right out of the gate.
In conclusion, I’m most proud of the fact that I kept my composure writing this preview. Now, it’s time to go to Goodwill and pick up some used college merchandise (bitter inside joke).

Michigan State 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
Two thoughts so far. 1st, I’m comfortable abiding by my rush data either way 11/2 vs. Indiana. 2nd, morale comes into play in the finale. I may look to back MSU vs. Rutgers if they just beat Purdue, but fade the Spartans if they lost that home game.
2024 Michigan State Football Schedule and Games to Watch
The goal is a 3-1 start, which requires going 2-1 hosting FAU, and on the road at Maryland and BC. MSU gets a favorable week off before hosting Iowa.
I’ll precheck MSU’s run game and Iowa’s new offensive coordinator. MSU is 17-4 SU at home vs. Indiana. Both teams have new staffs. That starts a November schedule which is full of teams that are NOT at the top of the Big Ten food chain.
They play at Illinois (which offense is better), and host Purdue and Rutgers. A wide range of November outcomes are possible, depending on how quickly the new staff comes together.
