Ole Miss College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Controversial, yes, Lane Kiffin knows exactly what’s right and what’s wrong about NCAA football and the changing landscape (NIL, transfer portal). 

On the field, his offenses are very difficult to defend and his defenses are improving.  His use of the transfer portal is legendary.  Their bowl win over PSU might signal something special.  The Rebels have high hopes for ’24. 
  
  

2024 Ole Miss NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

There are positives everywhere.  Their QB is highly experienced.  Two WR’s are more than solid.  The OL added talent at the highest level. 

The defense continues to improve, although the top teams have scored at will against them.  Modest talent returns, but no player was drafted before the 5th round, so starters lost are replaceable.  To that end, the Rebels might have six transfer defensive starters, four from the SEC. 

I rate this defense as the best they’ve had.  Kicking is solid.  There are a couple of concerns, but it all goes right there will be no issues at all. 

I have the run game at 4.9 per carry, up from 4.5.  Let’s see how transfer RB Parrish (5.4 at MFla) adjusts to the SEC.  The other issue is the schedule layout 

Ole Miss Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

The talent level is 10-2 good, and even 11-1 good.  I detest the SEC layout, but opted for 10-2. 

My scheduling grid really hates the layout, and calls 9-3 a possible stretch.  Four teams will make the playoffs from the SEC.  I took OL Miss to be one of them (-130).  Is that in doubt?

2024 Ole Miss Football Schedule and Games to Watch

I expect a 4-0 start, all outside of the SEC.  OL Miss “should” win vs. Kentucky, but they’ve had trouble in SEC openers, and only beat the Wildcats 22-19 as a host in ’22.  They “should” win at South Carolina, but the Gamecocks and their next opponent, LSU, have a rest advantage. 

The Gamecocks are 15-6 SU at home under Beamer (4-10 on the road).  Having a bye week after LSU enables this team to reset for the closing stretch, starting with a host of Oklahoma.  While facing Arkansas right before Georgia isn’t ideal, and of course facing Georgia, even at home is tough. 

Having another bye week before going to Florida is outstanding, mostly because there might still be something to play for with the expanded playoff.  Mississippi closes hosting rival Mississippi St.  Their new coach was once a coordinator under Kiffin.  

Ole Miss 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

I’m concerned with letdowns at various times due to the schedule pacing noted above.  Of note: Lane doesn’t mind winning and covering vs. inferior teams. 

I like them 9/7 vs. MTSU but might fade them 11/2 at Arkansas.
