Boston College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

College football is different now.  Instead of waiting around to possibly get fired, Jeff Hafley (25-26 here, and 11-21 in ACC play) bailed, taking the job of defensive coordinator with Green Bay.  Bill O’Brien comes in, trying to kickstart his own career.  

2024 Boston College NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

Offensively, the run game improved tremendously with QB Castellanos at the helm (1,113-5.2-13 TD’s).  More of the same should be expected, but the 57%, and 14-13 TD to interception ratio needs to improve. 

There’s enough offensive talent surrounding him to make this work as long as the coaching transition is seamless (a must watch all September). 

Defensively, I am not projecting much change from last year’s numbers (as always, run #’s corrected for sacks, kneel downs, botched punts etc, using my specific formula).  I like the DL, but with the schedule bump up, we still might see close to 5.0 allowed per-carry, although again, it will be interesting to see what effect the NFL style coaching has on these #’s. 

BC had but 13 defensive sacks a year ago.  That is an absolute must watch area for all of my readers.  Kicking should be fine.

Boston College Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

Boston College has not won more than 7 games since 2009.  Stuck in mediocrity, Bill O’Brien is a worthy choice to orchestrate a change, but ‘24 might be a bridge year. 

Maybe opponents Virginia and SMU will not fall into the 61% category.  If so, another 7-5 season and 15 more bowl practices will be the result. 

I think they may need to split the season-ending home games to get to 6-6, but a bowl appearance should be expected.  NOTE: My comprehensive conference win grid, providing win %’s for each game, does not think BC will be a bowl team.

2024 Boston College Football Schedule and Games to Watch

’24 PREVIEW: The schedule is tougher outside of the ACC with Missouri and even Michigan State on it (no power 4/5 teams on the ’23 schedule). 

A surprisingly important data point comes 9/7 hosting 7-5 Duquesne.  This is just 5 DAYS after they travel to FSU, and will be a nice test for this run defense.  There’s a shot Boston College runs the record to 4-2 before heading to improved Virginia Tech, but I’m calling this 3-3 unless I see a) critical QB pass improvement, b) a pass rusher emerge, and/or C) significant and noticeable coaching upgrades. 

The 6th game is at a rested Virginia, who could be dangerous due to a significant 61% situation that has a sample size of over 700 and has been consistent over decades (to be determined if they are in that situation). 

Sitting at possibly 3-4, home games vs. Louisville (56-28 loss a year ago) and Syracuse 17-10 win last year) will likely determine their bowl fate.  I think they “should” at least split these two, especially if O’Brien can make a coaching difference. 

Two questions I need to answer before the Syracuse game: 1st, which of the new coaches is performing better in ’24?  2nd, will Boston College be the projected rush pick in this game (75-55 ATS in this role, fits another metric here as well)? 

Like with Virginia, there’s a chance that SMU has the same 61% situation in their favor on 11/16.  In addition, SMU “tanked” last year when they lost to BC 23-14 in the bowl game.  That was not the impression they wanted to make entering a Power 4 conference.  Closing games are home to North Carolina (turnovers and defense will be my key checks for both teams) and Pittsburgh. 

Boston College 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

I keep records of how I do with each team, and the relevance of rush data for each team and conference (still useful, but not nearly as much as in the past). 

I went 4-2 ATS here in ’23, and 15-8 ATS the past seven seasons.  It’s tricky with new staffs, but I do have plenty of early opinions.  I like BC if they are the rush pick 11/9 vs. Syracuse.  I may fade them 9/7 hosting Duquesne, and if Virginia is off a win prior to that game on 10/5, and if SMU is off a win prior to that game on 11/16.
