Baylor College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
When Baylor went 6-6 in ’22 I was not alarmed, as there were massive reasons why they figured to drop all the way down from 12-2. I predicted 6-6 that year.
I did not predict 3-9 for ’23. Nearly fired, Dave Aranda was proactive, and had a master plan for improvement ready to go literally seconds after the season ended. That impressed the AD. This season should be interesting.
2024 Baylor NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
It all started with coaching “changes”. Baylor bought coordinator Jake Spavital from cash poor California, and that’s an upgrade. Seven starters return, but all eyes will be on transfer QB Dequan Finn, who had a productive career at Toledo.
I expect improvement across the board offensively. Aranda has said on more than one occasion how he plans to be much more hands-on with the defense, his previous calling card. That’s a good thing, as the now 2nd year coordinator saw every key defensive metric regress last season.
The top five tacklers return, but pass pressure will need to be replenished. JUCO nose tackle Tonga Lolohea is on my watch list, as he is needed badly to help reduce Baylor’s unusually high 5.25 per carry run D. I like the secondary and my projections have them improving vs. the pass. Kicking is average.
Baylor Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
I like Aranda as a coach, and I like how he recognized the need to change his offense and his early willingness to put forward a detailed attack plan.
I think they can reach 6-6 and get to a bowl game this year. Much depends on how QB Finn fares in a power conference, and if Aranda can stabilize a defense that has regressed badly from their banner ’22 campaign. An upset or two this season would hardly be surprising.

2024 Baylor Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Baylor’s rematch with Utah is NOT a conference game this season, but like the Arizona-Kansas St matchup, it’s a good early test. Aranda’s run defense gets an early test when they host Air Force.
There’s at least a half-dozen pre-checks for their matchup at Colorado, whose roster will again be vastly different from a year ago. A “must” win hosting BYU is next. Confidence would drop if they lost, and most of the rest of the schedule is vs. higher rated teams, at least as it stands now. It’s a mixed history at Iowa St, but that team will challenge Baylor’s offense.
How much of an impact is the new coordinator and new QB having? Can Baylor split games at Texas Tech, home to Oklahoma St and TCU, and at West Virginia? Despite poor records, Baylor went 8-7 SU the past three seasons.
With so many returning starters, I think Baylor remains competitive on the road. Baylor closes at rebuilding Houston and home to Kansas. The Bears have won the last 13 vs. Kansas, but the Jayhawks are better than when they last faced each other.
Baylor 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
Let’s just repeat the last three years please (12-0 ATS). I LOVE the early schedule as it’s not only challenging, but should get me some great reads once October hits.
I’ll look to back Baylor as a dog 10/19 at Texas Tech, especially with rush data agreement. I’m waiting on the rest, but as said above, I think this team can be competitive on the road.
