Iowa State College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Put up or shut up! Matt Campbell is rightfully considered a solid coach, but the last time his team had big expectations they finished 7-6. They are 18-18 the last three seasons, and an additional 0-2 in bowl games. This may be his best team yet. It’s time to live up to the hype.
2024 Iowa State NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
This is the 3rd season in a row Iowa St has a new offensive coordinator. It’s another in-house promotion, but still, something to watch. Raw QB Becht had a promising debut. Can he grow even more? RB Samu had two solid games, and is hyped big-time now.
1st, can he be the answer all season long, and 2nd, I have a real concern about the depth behind him. I’ve actually dropped the run projection for ’24, but I’ll check to see if I am too low. The WR and the OL room look good, and ready to deliver.
The defensive coordinator is one of the best. He gets his top five tacklers back, and I have them at or near the top of all Big 12 defenses. The projected run D is at 3.65 per carry (4.0 was their closing figure in ’23). The pass D% is projected at 56%. Iowa St gets involved in quite a few close games due to their style of play.
The one MAJOR concern I have is close game kicking. They go from a solid PK to a redshirt freshman. This will be charted all season long.
Iowa State Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
his DC is so good that all Iowa St needs to do is stay healthy at RB (one guy), and hope their raw PK is a good one.
Barring an upset, their season will come down to their final two games, at Utah, and home to Kansas St. Their season win total is set at 7.5, and that’s the number I initially get when projecting their win total. That’s not good enough to get them into the Big 12 Title game. I like the talent on the team and the coaching, but their history is not finishing close games, and for ’24, kicking is the big-ticket item.

2024 Iowa State Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Iowa St faced Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas St last season. This year it’s just Kansas St, with Utah added to the list. Despite the solid depth, I’ve seen Iowa St stumble early, even vs. lower-level teams. North Dakota might make the opener close.
Iowa St had a rare victory over Iowa in ’22 at their place. I’m concerned that the pressure will be too much on the raw PK to pull off another win at their place. Things do loosen up after that, but consider this: Iowa St has lost a whopping ten games when favored over the past three seasons! They have too much returning talent to let that happen again, but they returned 20 starters in ’21 and lost four times when favored!
On the flip side, Iowa St has been a solid Big 12 dog, and went 3-1 SU in that role last year. While I have very few game-by-game notes for them, two things stand out. 1st, the pace of the schedule is quite good, and Iowa St has no back-to-back road games or anything close to a trap game. 2nd, let’s say it again: Kicking is going to matter big-time for this team.
Iowa State 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
In a STUNNING display of bad judgment, I went 0-5 in their games, although I did manage a real solid bowl game victory. In retrospect, there’s no play I wished I had back.
I’ll lean vs. 8/31 hosting North Dakota, lean vs. if they are not a rush pick via my formula, but lean for as a Big 12 underdog. In close spreads, I need to know how good this PK is, and that will help decide which way my action will go.
