Kansas College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Lance Leipold (109-6 in DIII, built Buffalo to be a major force in the MAC) took this job in late May, 21. After a 5-7 mark in ’22, the Jayhawks went 10-3 last season.
That they did this with their lead QB missing ¾ of the season, and with a defense that put up #’s resembling a 3-9 team is quite amazing. Let’s see what Kansas brings to the table this year.
2024 Kansas NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
The ’24 version has mostly upperclassmen starters, with the offense a senior-laded group. Their coordinator got poached (Penn State), replaced by Baylor’s former coordinator. That won’t likely be as troublesome this year with Daniels back at QB, and two explosive RB’s.
The OL allowed just 44 sacks in three seasons (38 games). I’ll watch that dynamic just in case. In ’22 and ’23 Kansas allowed 4.8 per carry. At some point that needs to change, but on media day, Leipold noted that was still an area of concern. The pass D% was also high (66%), but points allowed has been improving (26+ in ’23).
My pass D projection is at 63%. Kansas lost its top pass rusher, so pass pressure figures to be average at best. This is another team that breaks in a new PK. As someone who values special team study, I can’t emphasize enough it’s importance to the Big 12 race, considering so many teams are in the mix to reach the title game.
Basically, my areas to watch are very clear with this team, but there’s also another factor for ’24 (and ’25). With construction taking place to their existing stadium, the Jayhawks will play twice in a soccer stadium, and four times at the home of the KC Chiefs. That’s a must watch as well.
The new coordinator is from Iowa State (LB coach). His tutelage, plus all the transfers and their contributions will be a must watch as the season unfolds. Kicking is solid.
Kansas Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
I really like the Head Coach, and history says they can go 9-3 or more, but way too many things (lost long-time coordinator, suspect DL and pass rush, new PK, no true home field) seem stacked against them this year. I’m calling this 7-5, (grid near 7.5), so the UNDER 8.5 looks attractive.

2024 Kansas Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Game #2 is at Illinois, and that one will give me data on the Kansas defense and kicking game. Kansas hosts UNLV next, and that game at a soccer field is one that UNLV has revenge, as these two met last year in a bowl game. The 1st two Big 12 matchups look like 50-50 affairs.
They head to West Virginia, and host TCU at Arrowhead. It’s critical (for me and everyone) to check the Kansas run D here, and before they travel to ASU, who has some RB talent. The “Wizard”, Bill Snyder dominated Kansas, and that tradition has continued, as Kansas St owns Kansas. Last year the Jayhawks almost got it done, but Kansas St rallied, down 11 to win.
Unfortunately for Kansas, the rematch is at their place, and Kansas St will be rested. I have factors pointing both ways when Kansas “hosts” Iowa St, but this is overall another tricky spot. Kansas may rally with a trio of “easier” games down the stretch, but motivation will be a factor, as well as the need to show some progress defensively.
Kansas 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
The rush stat formula works quite well when going against Kansas, to the tune of 42-13 vs. the spread. Under Leipold, the stat sheet has improved so much that only once have they been a “play against team” the past three seasons. (they lost).
That’s one approach I will take, and I also hope to go vs. Kansas 11/9 if favored vs. Iowa State. One more thing: Kansas has a weaker backup QB this season, so I might be in fade mode early if Daniels misses time.
