UConn College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

After finishing 6-7 (bowl loss) in an overachieving ’22, UConn regressed to 3-9 last year.  Given their ending ’22 Power Number, regression wasn’t that shocking.  This is year #3.  Jim Mora needs to prove (again) that he can build a program up.

2024 UConn NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

UConn’s pass D% was on my watch list in this spot a year ago.  That # regressed, all the way to 67.7%.  Personnel wise, the defense is about the same.  Again, this is year #3.  We should see some improvement, and securing more than 17 defensive sacks would help. 

QB and pass protection are my two biggest ’24 keys offensively.  QB play was dismal a year ago, despite the OL allowing just 12 sacks.  The OL is down this year.  The run game should be fine, but to score more than 19 per game (which WAS the case in the ’22 bowl year and last year), QB play has to improve. 

This will be a weekly check on my part.  Kicking was often an adventure in ’23.  The new PK (Indiana) was 10-14 there. 

UConn Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

6-6, and OVER 4.5 wins (+115).  I’ve never been a big fan of playing season win overs, but I see this team as slightly improved, so coupled with two perceived easier games this season, that moves their 3-9 record up.  Hopefully, QB play will not let me down, and the kicking game will be decent enough.

2024 UConn Football Schedule and Games to Watch

The schedule is easier with two tougher opponents gone.  They may start 1-2, losing at Maryland and at Duke, but I expect them to be more competitive than what was shown in ’23.  In the amazing but true column, games 4-9 are all at home!  UConn went 1-5 SU at home last year.  Wins are expected hosting Buffalo, Temple and Georgia State. 

I’ll need to adjust if that doesn’t happen.  They also host FAU, Wake, and Rice.  UAB has flaws, especially defensively, but that road game could be a loss.  UConn closes at UMass.  This would be a bad year if they entered that game at just 5-6, and a worse year if that was a loss (won 31-18 at UMass last year).

UConn 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

This is not a team I’ve had much action on, for or against.  With even modest QB play, my recommendation would be to find some play on spots.  I’ll lean their way 8/31 vs. Maryland, hoping to be ahead of any improvement curve, but will use the stat sheet to determine if I need to back off from further action on this team.
