President’s Cup Betting Preview

While not quite the same fanfare as the longer-standing Ryder Cup, the President’s Cup still gives us a nice taste at team golf with Team USA taking on the International Team. Jim Furyk is captaining for Team USA while Canadian Mike Weir will lead the International Team on home soil.

This will be the 15th edition of the President’s Cup which has been completely dominated by the Americans with a 12-1-1 record. They are once again heavy favorites to win this week thanks to both history in this competition and of course, a stacked lineup.

Team USA has eight players ranked inside the Top-15 OWGR and all 12 rank inside the Top-25. Compare that to the International Team with only one player ranked inside the Top-15 (Matsuyama) as most rank between 30-40th.

However, experience favors the International Team with Adam Scott leading the way in his whopping 11th President’s Cup, along with Matsuyama (6th) and Day (5th). They also only feature two rookies. Meanwhile, three appearances are the most of anyone on Team USA with Schauffele, Cantlay, and Finau sharing the honors, to go along with four rookies.

Moving on to the golf course, The Royal Montreal Golf Club is the host of this year’s edition having also hosted this competition back in 2007, along with the Canadian Open in 2014.

Only wily veteran Adam Scott competed here in 2007 though ironically, captain Mike Weir was also a player on that team as he famously beat Tiger Woods in singles on Sunday, though Team USA still won the event.

The course is relatively flat with a parkland style tree-lined front nine and a more open back nine with water coming into play on the final five holes. The greens are all slightly perched with numerous greenside bunkers guarding every complex. This is certainly not a links-style track, and players will face tricky pitch and lob shots when missing the greens.

The tradition of the President’s Cup is that the host captain gets to influence course setup throughout the week and the early rumor is Mike Weir is asking for rough to grow up the four inches to try and penalize the long-hitting Americans that miss fairways. Considering history on this course has tended to favor hitting fairways, it makes a lot of sense.

Tim Clark won the Canadian Open here in 2014, in a season in which he ranked 2nd in Driving Accuracy. Prior to that, Scott Verplank was victorious in 2001 amid a great driving season, ranking 13th in Driving Accuracy.

While winning one 18-hole match is much different than winning a 72-hole stroke play event, it is probably wise to pay close attention to those that have been accurate with the driver, ahem, Russell Henley, anyone?

The weather looks dicey on Thursday for the opener with a chance of thunderstorms, but after that, it looks to be a literal non-factor with temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s, and neither rain nor wind in sight.

President’s Cup Format

Unlike the Ryder Cup, the President’s Cup starts on Thursday and features five four-ball (best ball) or foursomes (alternate shot) matches.

The host captain will decide on Wednesday. Friday is followed by another five matches of the opposite format that is played on Thursday.

Saturday features eight total matches, four of each foursomes and four-ball in a morning wave and afternoon wave. Finally, all 24 players face off in singles matches on Sunday.

President’s Cup: How To Beat Team USA

At -275 to -300, Team USA is hard to bet on to win the President’s Cup unless you can find something else to parlay them with, which is honestly a decent option.

They are 12-1-1 in this competition and have won it each of the last nine times. The discrepancy of talent between the sides is noticeable to say the least so find your favorite football, er futbol, wager to parlay with them this week (my client plays will most certainly have this Cross Sport Parlay).

Another way to get down on Team USA this week is to look to bet on individual day winners. Right now, the format on Thursday and Friday is to be decided by captain Mike Weir on Wednesday.

Typically, the US is best in four-ball where both players can play their own ball and just choose the better score of the two.

Currently you can bet Team USA +115 as the Four-ball winner on Saturday. However, that’s the 3-way market which includes ties and with only four matches during that slate, a 2-2 finish would result in a loss.

With five matches scheduled on both Thursday and Friday, wait to see which day is four-ball and fire away. Currently you can bet either day at -145 odds.

President’s Cup: Top Team Points

Another fun way to bet this event is to wager on who you think will score the most points overall, or just for their team. The first step is to figure out who is likely to play in all five sessions.

For example, Rory played in all five at last year’s Ryder Cup and went 4-1 for his team, earning the most points.

For Team USA, it would make sense to expect either Scheffler or Schauffele to have the best chance to play in all five sessions, but at the very least, certainly four of them. Of course, that’s reflected in the odds with those two players listed at +400 and +450, respectively.

Going a little deeper, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Sahith Theegala and Russell Henley are all rookies on the US squad and of the four, I like Theegala to show the most fire and emotion which is needed to excel in this competition.

You could argue Russell Henley is another good choice based on his skillset of being very accurate, but he lacks the emotion you would like to see. Theegala is +250 and Henley is +550 to be the Top USA Rookie.

President’s Cup: Can you bet the International Team?

It just seems odd to create teams that will blend well together when one is a Canadian and one is from Japan. How much talking could they really do?

That being said, you would expect Weir to pair fellow countrymen together with three Canadians on the squad and four South Koreans.

I would look for individual matches of the like and if possible, in the foursomes format. There is something about a South Korean pairing of Tom Kim/Ben An that would certainly show plenty of fire.
