Mississippi State’s Humphrey Coliseum will be rockin’ on Wednesday night and we understand the sentiment for wanting to bet on the Bulldogs, but this has simply been a nightmare matchup for Chris Jans’s squad.
Since the 2020-21 season, Alabama has won nine of the last ten meetings with several of those wins coming in blow-out fashion. The Crimson Tide won both of last year’s contests, including a 32-point win in Tuscaloosa in February.
The formula in this matchup is very simple: Three is greater than two. Coach Oats has a simple philosophy on offense – Your first look should be at the rim, and if that is not there, look for a three-pointer.
The Crimson Tide are playing at the fastest pace in the country entering Wednesday, and Alabama’s offense is top-20 in efficiency, offensive rebounding rate, free throw attempts and two-point shooting percentage.
Over 47-percent of Alabama’s field goal attempts have come from beyond the arc, which is top-25 in the country. Mississippi State has already lost to Kentucky, Auburn and Tennessee in the SEC, and needed overtime to beat Ole Miss and South Carolina.
We’re a couple bounces away from Mississippi State being on a five-game losing streak heading into this contest.
The Bulldogs blew a 14-point lead in the second half against South Carolina on Saturday, scoring a total of five points over the last nine minutes of the game when the Gamecocks switched to a 1-3-1 zone defense that the Bulldogs didn’t know how to beat.
That is troubling against an Alabama defense that can throw a variety of looks at you with one of the deepest rosters in college basketball.

In their two meetings last season, the Crimson Tide didn’t even shoot well but they just bludgeoned the Bulldogs with shot volume.
Alabama shot 32.9-percent from three-point range, but Oats knows how to play the numbers game in these matchups. Mississippi State only made a total of 11 three-pointers in those two games.
When you’re playing against the fastest-paced team in the country, that formula is simply not going to work. In conference play, Mississippi State is shooting 28.3-percent from three-point range.
The Bulldogs have not shown that they can make up the three-point differential in this matchup against Alabama.
