We’ve been riding Purdue and “overs” in Purdue’s games consistently over the last month, and we’re not jumping off that train on Tuesday.

The Boilermakers are 9-2 against the spread in their last 11 games, and the over is 8-3 in those games. In Big Ten play, Purdue has hit the 80-point mark seven times in 13 games.

Since the calendar turned to 2025, the Boilermakers have been one of the most-improved teams in the country and they were already pretty good to begin with.

Purdue has jumped 20 spots in KenPom’s ratings, going from No. 27 to No. 7. Purdue has jumped 18 spots in Bart Torvik’s ratings, going from No. 27 to No. 9.

Most of that success can be attributed to the dynamic inside-outside combination of junior forward Trey Kaufman-Renn and junior guard Braden Smith.

Credit head coach Matt Painter for addressing the glaring weakness that his squad has faced in each of the last five seasons: Turnovers. In the 2020-21 season, Purdue’s offense was outside the top-150 in turnover rate and the Boilermakers were turning the ball over on 18.6-percent of their possessions.

Purdue’s turnover rate has dropped every season since then, and currently sits at 16.0-percent this year. Smith’s turnover rate has dropped from 21.1-percent last year to 18.3-percent this year and he leads the entire country in assist rate.

What can Michigan do to avoid another 27-point defeat at the hands of Purdue? We’re not sure. The Boilermakers have won each of the last four meetings in this Big Ten battle, including a 91-64 win in West Lafayette three weeks ago.

Smith nearly finished that game with a triple-double, scoring 24 points with ten assists, seven rebounds and four steals.

That game was over from the opening whistle as Purdue started the contest with a 13-2 run and had a 29-point lead 15 minutes into the game.

We already mentioned how Purdue is surging right now according to some advanced analytics. Well, the opposite is happening in Ann Arbor.

Michigan has won each of its last four games, yet the Wolverines are dropping. All four of those wins against Penn State, Rutgers, Oregon and Indiana came by four points or fewer.

We were on the Wolverines against Indiana on Saturday (which featured a 60-foot buzzer-beater at the final whistle), and we did not walk away with a great impression of the maize-and-blue in that one.

Purdue vs Michigan Predictions

Michigan’s non-conference schedule is also worthy of revisiting. Beating TCU looked nice at the time, but the Horned Frogs are below .500 in the Big 12.

Beating Xavier looked nice at the time, but the Musketeers are below .500 in the Big East. Losing to Arkansas doesn’t look great, considering the Razorbacks are 3-7 in the SEC.

Losing to Oklahoma doesn’t look great, considering the Sooners are 3-7 in the SEC. Michigan also got to make the inaugural Big Ten West Coast road trip in the first week of January after a holiday break and before the true grind of the Big Ten schedule was in full effect.

There are holes in Michigan’s game. Purdue was able to take full advantage in the first meeting, and we expect the Boilermakers to handle business again in the rematch.
