Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman will take on former 140lb champion Mario Barrios this weekend at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada live on PBC/FOX PPV. Keith Thurman comes into this one as the -190 favorite with Mario Barrios coming back as a +160 underdog.

Thurman’s Inactivity

While Keith Thurman may be the one with the credentials in this division, former unified welterweight champion for instance, that was a long time ago and with just one fight over the last three years, many observers are questioning exactly how much ‘One Time’ has left in the tank after numerous injuries and layoffs derailed his career.

Barrios’ First Foray up to 147

Mario Barrios has carved out a name for himself in the 140lb division over the last few years with solid performances against both Batyr Makhmedov and Gervonta Davis, but despite being the physically bigger man in this fight, this will be his first foray up to the 147lb division.

After getting clipped by effectively a hard hitting lightweight in his last fight, the question is, how will Barrios fare against the power of a genuine welterweight this weekend?

Keith Thurman vs. Mario Barrios Prediction

Keith Thurman’s inactivity is no doubt the major intrigue surrounding this fight.

While Barrios should operate as a solid litmus test here for Thurman on Saturday night, a good pressure fighter who will continue to come forward, he is nonetheless limited in there.

Gervonta Davis showed that when he finally turned it on late against Barrios in their last fight, Barrios had little to no answer for him and that should provide Keith Thurman with a ton of opportunities this weekend also.

Thurman hasn’t had much live experience over the last few years, but what he did show against Manny Pacquiao in his last fight was enough that, while he’s no doubt the fighter he once was, even a slightly faded version of Thurman here should have enough to overcome Mario Barrios this weekend.

At his best, Keith Thurman was a fluid mover, employed an excellent jab and utilized a full range of punch selection, and if he can get back to even 75-80% of that here on Saturday night, he should have enough to get his hand raised in this one against Barrios.

Thurman hasn’t been ‘One Time’ in a long time and I don’t see him getting the stoppage here on Saturday night, so take Keith Thurman to win by decision at +175 as your boxing play for Saturday.
