Villarreal vs Bayern Munich Analysis

Bayern Munich travels to the Estadio de la Ceramica to take on Villarreal on Wednesday night in a true David vs Goliath contest as the Germans enter the quarterfinal matchup as very strong favorites to progress through to the semifinal stage after demolishing Salzburg 8-2 on aggregate in the last round.

That shouldn’t dissuade Villarreal, however, as they’ve shown how good they can be in Europe over recent seasons, winning last season’s Europa League title and subsequently pushing Chelsea all the way in the UEFA Super Cup as well.

It’s been just over a decade since these two team’s last met in Champions League action with Bayern Munich coming out 2-0 and 3-1 winners respectively back in the 2011/12 Champions League group stage.

Bayern Munich Finding Form At The Right Time

After a fairly lackluster February and early March for the German champions, things have finally started to kick into gear for Bayern of late.

A run of just three wins from seven last month saw some observers hitting the panic button on this team’s chances to lift the European title this season, but since March 9th ‘Die Bayern’ have won three games from four and have outscored opponents 16 goals to 3 across that run as well.

Villarreal Strike Gold In Turin

It’s fair to say for anyone who missed Villarreal’s victory over Juventus in the last round that the 3-0 final scoreline flattered the Spanish visitors in that one.

Juventus dominated most of the game before a reckless penalty late on in the 78th minute put Villarreal in front. As Juventus subsequently pushed for an equalizer they were caught off-guard yet again with two more goals going in before the finish, sinking the Italian side’s hopes of progressing through to a first Champions League quarterfinal since 2019.

Villarreal will need a far better performance here, however, as Lewandowski and Co. are likely to be far more unforgiving in front of nets than Juventus were.

Villarreal vs Bayern Munich Prediction

Bayern Munich is trading at anywhere between -0.75 and -1 on the goal line at time of writing and that’s the way we’re going to look in this one.

Villarreal has a deserved reputation in European knockout games and for good reason, but just two wins from their last five games in all, one of which was that Juventus game where ‘the yellow submarine’ arguably got very fortunate in, signals there’s a huge gulf between where these two sides are at right now.

Bayern only seems to be getting stronger as the business end of the season approaches while the much vaunted Villarreal defense hasn’t been anywhere near as good at home as they were last season, barely scraping inside the top half of the table over in La Liga on expected goals against to opponents this season.

Bayern should punish that defensive decline here and we like them on the -1 handicap line (-0.75 if you can still get it) to win and cover here on Wednesday against Villarreal.
