Pittsburgh Penguins vs Colorado Avalanche Analysis

The Penguins have every right to feel somewhat aggrieved after that first result after a terrific performance in which they put up 40 shots in total over the course of the game and were fantastic in transition, but Devon Toews’ third period goal was the deciding factor in that one.

Colorado has now won eight of their last ten games while Pittsburgh have been alternating wins and losses since the end of March.

Seeking the President’s Trophy

The Avalanche remains the top team in the league this season and it’s easy to see why. Goalie Darcy Kuemper is expected to be in the net tonight, and he has performed like a top-five rated goalie this season.

Colorado’s offense is fourth in total shots this season and has amassed the highest number of power play goals. It’s obvious to see why the books have installed Colorado as firm favorites to lift the Stanley Cup this year.

Penguins Strong In Home Favorite Role

The Pittsburgh Penguins haven’t been as impressive this season at home as perhaps they have been in previous years, going 19-10-5 this year inside PPG Paints Arena, but long term, the Penguins have been absolutely solid in this role.

The Penguins have gone 174-83 as home favorites over their last 257 games in Pittsburgh. That equates to a 67.7% win percentage over the last few seasons in this role and if Saturday’s performance is anything to go by, it’s completely justified.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Colorado Avalanche Prediction

Pittsburgh will be fired up for this one after Saturday’s matchup as they look to get one over who Mike Matheson dubbed “the best team in the league.”

Pittsburgh will no doubt want to hold home serve here and with Tristan Jarry expected in nets along with the league’s fifth-highest expected goals rated offense this season as well, the Penguins are certainly more than capable of doing just that.

Colorado is packing a +25 ax differential this year in terms of overall chances converted and given up, which is the second-highest in the league this season. So it’ll be interesting to see if there’s any slide in those numbers approaching the playoffs.

By comparison, Pittsburgh is almost dead even on that scale, so the Penguins have been doing things the hard way. It certainly doesn’t hurt that they’ve won seven of the past ten meetings against Colorado in this same venue, we like the Penguins to get the home win over the visiting Colorado Avalanche.
