Rockies vs Phillies Analysis

The Philadelphia Phillies visit the Colorado Rockies in the second of a three-game set at Coors Field. It’s a battle of the Kyles as right-handed Gibson goes against the southpaw Freeland.

Gibson Looks to Bounce Back

The fightin’ Phils are under .500 to start the year with good stats at the plate – an 9th best OPS of .746 before Monday night’s action – but not-so-good pitching with a 5th-worst team ERA of 5.07.

However, they do have a respectable team WHIP of 1.29. The latter number could lead to a lower ERA going forward and positive regression for the Phils staff. Veteran pitcher Kyle Gibson takes the mound with mixed results in his first two starts.

An excellent opening debut against the A’s, going 7.0 shutout innings, scattering two hits and striking out 10; then followed by a more average game against the Miami Marlins: 4.2 innings, five hits, four earned runs, six strikeouts and three walks.

Phillies hitters have started the year well, as the team’s in the top 10 in both OPS and batting average. Nick Castellanos and Jean Segura lead the team at the plate, as both have OPS numbers above .900.

Granted it’s a small sample size to start the year, but the Phillies resemble the Rockies teams of old who had better-than-average hitting and below-average pitching.

Joe and Cron Turning Heads Around the League

The Rockies have gotten off to a good start with a 7-3 record, and Denver native Kyle Freeland makes his third start on Tuesday night. The lefty’s first two starts have been less-than-stellar, giving up five earned runs apiece to the Dodgers and Cubs.

Team ERA is 12th-best at 3.62, but the Rox hurlers sport a 5th-worst WHIP of 1.41. If it stays at or near this level, this WHIP number could lead to negative regression and more runs given up by the Rockies staff. So far, the bullpen has been able to work its way out of most jams with little to no damage.

The team’s bats are A-OK after the first ten games of the year, with a 3rd-best OPS of .797 and league-leading batting average of .280.

Connor Joe and C.J. Cron are in the top 10 in baseball for OPS, with averages over 1.100, and Joe is in the top 15 in batting average at .361 before Monday night’s game.

Rockies vs Phillies Prediction

During last weekend’s series with the Cubs, we saw higher-scoring games that we’re used to seeing at Coors Field.

Most of the Rockies games this year have seen runs scored against them in the early innings versus the later ones. In the two games versus the Marlins where they gave up 7 and 11 runs, I saw the same trend – more runs given up in the first half versus the second half of the games.

As they say on Wall Street “the trend is your friend,” and I think Gibson and Freeland should continue this trend. That’s why I’ll take the 1st 5 innings over the run total.

Prediction: 1st 5 Innings Over
