Blue Jays vs Red Sox Analysis
The Toronto Blue Jays welcome the Boston Red Sox to the Rogers Centre to kick off a four game series on Monday night. The Red Sox will be looking to bounce back after falling to the Tampa Bay Rays 5-2 yesterday afternoon.
The Jays will also be hoping to get back on track after losing a back and forth battle 8-7 against the Houston Astros. These teams met just last week at Fenway Park and Toronto prevailed and won the series 2-1.
Last season the Red Sox won the season series and you would have to fully expect another hard fought head-to-head matchup this season. Each team starts their current ace as Nathan Eovaldi starts for Boston and Jose Berrios starts for Toronto. First pitch is slated for 7:07pm EST.
Red Sox Need to Stop The Bleeding
The Boston Red Sox currently occupy 4th place in the American League East with a 7-9 record on the season. Boston has picked up only one series win so far, going 1-3-1 in five series thus far.
Not quite what Red Sox Nation envisioned. Red Sox Manager Alex Cora will not make the trip to Toronto after testing positive for Covid-19 on Thursday.
Starting pitcher Tanner Houck and backup Catcher Kevin Plawecki will not be allowed to join the team in Toronto as they are unvaccinated.
J.D. Martinez did travel with the team but his status remains uncertain due to a groin injury. The Sox offense is below average in runs scored due to the fact that can’t string together hits or hit homeruns.
They rank 18th in team average and 24th in home runs, well below expectations for these bats. Veteran righty Nathan Eovaldi gets the nod, he brings a 1-0 record and 3.86 ERA into the contest. Eovaldi pitched against Toronto last week and allowed only one run in only 4.2 innings of work.
Blue Jays Perched Atop Division Standings
After getting edged out by the Houston Astros yesterday the Toronto Blue Jays record sits at 10-6 good for a share of first place in the American League East with the New York Yankees. Still, it was another successful series as the Jays took two of three from Houston.
The Blue Jays have won four of their five series with a split against the New York Yankees being the worst they have done. It’s definitely been helpful that the Jays have been relatively healthy, though Teoscar Hernandez and Danny Jansen are both out with oblique injuries.
The Jays were built to be one of the most explosive offenses in the major leagues. They have impressed but there is room for improvement as they rank 6th in batting average and 9th in OPS.
They do rank first homeruns, yet only 16th in runs per game as they need to improve on their clutch hitting. Jose Berrios will toe the rubber after having a successful start against the Red Sox last week.
Berrios spread out 8 hits and a walk across 6 innings, while allowing only one run and striking out six. Unfortunately for him he wasn’t even remotely close to as sharp in his first two starts where he allowed a combined 7 earned runs in only 5.1 innings. All in all not so good as he has an average of 3.2 innings per start with a 6.35 ERA.
Blue Jays vs Red Sox Prediction
We basically have a 50/50 game with the money line set at -125 for the Toronto Blue Jays and +105 for the Boston Red Sox with a total of 8.
Picking a side seems like a coin flip and we won’t see an 8 as a total at Fenway in July. It’s hard for me to ignore how potent both offenses are. I think the Jays can put together some runs against Eovaldi and the Sox pen.
I also think the Sox will do more damage against Berrios, seeing him for the 2nd time in about a week. Let’s go over what seems like a short number of 8.
Prediction: Over 8 Total Runs Scored
