Calgary Flames vs Dallas Stars Game 2 Analysis
The Calgary Flames took a 1-0 series lead against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night with Jacob Markstrom providing his 9th shutout of the season for the Flames, the league’s best overall record, and will look to follow that up with another victory on home ice on Thursday.
The Stars and Flames faced off against each other three times during the regular season, with Calgary holding a 2-1 series advantage over those games.
Stars Will Look To Up The Tempo in Game 2
It was a fairly subdued effort from the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night as they labored out of the blocks extremely slowly in Game 1 and didn’t get much better as the game wore on, having just six shots combined over the first and third periods.
That could bode well for them here tonight however as despite not playing their best game in Game 1, they were still in a position to win it throughout and could pose problems for the Flames tonight with a more focused effort.
Home Ice Has Been Beneficial To Calgary This Year
The Flames marked an impressive 25-9-7 home record this year to help them win the Pacific Division and they’ll be eager to continue that imposing record later tonight against the Stars.
Calgary averaged the third most shots on goal in the league over the regular season, with a 35.46 shots per game mark over the year, something they were a long way from in Game 1, so we’ll likely see a much better effort from the Flames here tonight as well.
Calgary Flames vs Dallas Stars Prediction
Both Jake Oettinger and Jacob Markstrom are expected back in nets tonight for the Stars and Flames respectively and both goalies have been absolutely solid this season.
Markstrom is #3 in the league overall this season with a 26.12 GSAA average while Oettinger has banked 27 quality starts this year as well.
On top of that, both defenses have allowed an under 10% shots to goal percentage this season, both top half in the league, and Calgary owned the league’s 3rd best expected goals against rating also.
With Dallas ranking 11th on high danger scoring opportunities allowed to opponents this year as well, I expect another low scoring encounter on Thursday night between the Dallas Stars and the Calgary Flames and taking the Under 5.5 goals later tonight in Game 2.
Prediction: Under 5.5 Total Goals Scored
