Tennessee vs Georgia Predictions

  • Tennessee Volunteers +20 vs Georgia Bulldogs
  • Total: 56 Points
  • Over the last four seasons, Georgia has out-scored Tennessee 166-47 in this annual matchup.

Tennessee held the edge in this series rivalry 23-21 against Georgia right up until 2017, but since then the Bulldogs have reeled off four straight victories over the Volunteers by an average scoring margin of 29.8 points to take a two game lead in the series.

That average scoring margin success for the Bulldogs hasn’t been restricted to just this series either. Georgia rank #1 in the nation on average scoring margin this season, outscoring opponents by an average margin of 31.9 points per game over 2021, a full 6 points ahead of 2nd placed Ohio State, and the majority of that success has been built on this elite Bulldogs defensive unit.

Georgia’s defense has given up just 6.6 ppg this season to opposing offenses, including just 5 ppg on the road this year, which is less than half that of 2nd best Texas A&M. However on Saturday, the Bulldogs face a Tennessee team returning home after a huge road win against a ranked Kentucky team last time out and will be looking to build on that success here at home.

The Volunteers pulled out that win despite getting dominated on the stats with a 46 to 13 minute time deficit in that game, getting out-gained by over 150 yards by the Wildcats, and having a full 18 first downs less than Kentucky as well. That’s something that Tennessee are going to have to sharpen up here as they prepare to face a Georgia team that has averaged the 3rd highest points per play margin in the country this season.

Georgia’s run game numbers have started to tick up over recent games as well and the Bulldogs have now averaged the 16th best rushing offense in the country over their last three starts, putting up 5.7 yards per rush attempt over that span.

That Georgia run game should have an absolute field day against this 82nd ranked Vols run defense which has given up 168.1 yards per game on the ground on average. Against Kentucky, Alabama and Ole Miss however, that number has since shot up even higher to 235.7 yards per game, and they won’t get any respite here against a Georgia offense averaging 7.8 yards per play over their last three starts. Florida held Tennessee to just 14 points back in Week 4, including 0 points in the second half of that game, and we see another dominant defensive performance here on Saturday from an even better defensive unit in Georgia.

The question is on the other side, how many points do Georgia themselves rack up here and how motivated will they be to run up the score on Tennessee in this spot? My guess is not very much. Georgia have broached 40 points just once over their last five starts as they continue to focus on much bigger matchups down the line from a national championship perspective, and as big as this series rivalry has traditionally been against Tennessee, Kirby Smart likely won’t be pushing his players to register a blowout victory here on Saturday against the Volunteers.

Take the Under 56 points on Saturday between the Bulldogs and Volunteers down in Knoxville, Tennessee in one of the standout games of the SEC card this week.

Tennessee vs Georgia Analysis from The GoldSheet

Well, as Joe Frazier found out a couple of times in the 70s when he walked into the center of the ring and tried to throw punches with George Foreman, sometimes strategy has to be adjusted when facing such an overwhelming foe. Top-ranked Georgia, and its defense that has allowed only five TDs into mid-November, invites those sorts of comparisons, and while not sure how Tennessee’s style equate to the rope-a-dope that Ali eventually employed to frustrate Foreman at the Rumble in the Jungle, the Vols might be able to do something else to cause the Bulldogs to blink.

Many SEC sources are suggesting that Josh Heupel’s tempo offense might be the only way to attack this Kirby Smart defense led by overwhelming DT Jordan Davis, who might win the Heisman if the vote were taken this week. But nobody has tried anything similar vs. Georgia this season, with the Likes of Arkansas, Auburn and others running their basic offenses that have all been stonewalled. Just a hunch, but we’d like to see how the Bulldogs react to a foe going at hyper-speed, as the Vols did when piling up 45 points (though one TD on a pick-six) in barely 13 minutes of possession vs. Kentucky last week.
