Texas Rangers vs Tampa Bay Rays Analysis

The Tampa Bay Rays play the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in third of a four-game set. Texas took the first two games, and the Rays hope to get their first win of the series in Arlington tonight Southpaw Jeffrey Springs goes against right-handed veteran Jon Gray.

Springs has Sprung

Tampa Bay hasn’t liked Texas hospitality so far, and look to Jeffrey Springs to help turn things around tonight. Springs has been a reliever and now a starter the last several games, and has put up good numbers this season.

In 13 appearances and five starts in 33.1 innings, the lefty has a 1.62 ERA, a 0.81 WHiP with 31 strikeouts. Springs has given up three home runs and just seven walks, so he doesn’t make many unforced errors on the mound.

In his last four starts he’s progressed from four up to 6.0 innings, and the Rays hope he can eat innings tonight to give more bullpen arms a rest.

Home on the Range

Texas has played better as of late because of better bullpen pitching, and timely home runs to generate offense. While they’re still just 21st in team OPS, they’re 10th in MLB with 55 long flies.

Starter Jon Gray hasn’t performed better this year getting away from Coors Field. In seven starts and 34.0 innings, he has a 5.56 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 32 strikeouts.

His last start was May 37th in Oakland where he went 6.0 innings, gave up five hits, five earned and two home runs. Judging by his performance year-to-date, I’m not sure if Gray was even a decent off-season pick up for the Rangers.

The best thing you can say about the veteran righty? He’s a serviceable major league arm who can eat innings and not give up too many runs. But that’s not much of a compliment.

Texas Rangers vs Tampa Bay Rays Prediction

The Rays are a better baseball team than Texas, with the edge in starting pitching. And after losing the first two games, I think Tampa is due for some positive regression.

If he can avoid giving up long flies, I think Springs should pitch well against this Rangers lineup. Tampa ran into the buzzsaw known as Martin Perez last night, and they should have a lot better success at the plate against Jon Gray. That’s why I’ll lean to the Rays for the 1st 5 innings money line.

Prediction: Tampa Bay Rays First Five Moneyline (-120)
