Colorado Rockies vs San Diego Padres Analysis

The San Diego Padres visit Coors Field to take on the Colorado Rockies in the first of a three game weekend series. The Friars swept four from the Cubs in Chicago, while the Rox dropped all three games at home to Cleveland.

It’s a battle of southpaws Friday night as MacKenzie Gore (4-2, 2.50 ERA) takes the bump against Kyle Freeland (2-5, 4.39 ERA).

San Diego is a road favorite at -150 while Colorado is a home dog at +130 and the over/under is 12.5. Both teams and starters just faced each other when the Rockies were in San Diego, and Freeland outdueled Gore June 11th in a 6-2 Colorado win.

San Diego Padres Betting Preview

It looks like the Padres are doing just fine without Fernando Tatis Jr. as they lead the NL West by a half game over the Dodgers with a 41-24 overall record – and the best road record in MLB at 24-11.

San Diego’s success has been mainly due to their pitching, as they have the 5th lowest overall and 9th lowest bullpen ERA in baseball. They have an 18th best OPS at .698 and a .243 team batting average.

MacKenzie Gore has done well as a rookie pitcher, but after a good number of starts was due to have some negative regression.

He had a couple of bad innings in his last outing, but I think he can make the right adjustments and pitch well – even at the altitude of Coors Field.

Colorado Rockies Betting Preview

It used to be that the Rockies had one of (if not the best) home-field advantage in MLB, and would launch baseballs left and right out of Coors Field. But not in 2022.

After seeing Thursday’s game in person against Cleveland, it looks like visiting teams aren’t scared of playing at 20th and Blake anymore. And this Colorado team isn’t the modern-day version of the Blake Street Bombers.

Colorado has lost their last seven games at home versus the Braves and Guardians, and they don’t have that much pop at the plate.

Right now they’re tied for 23rd with the White Sox and Padres in home runs with just 54, and are 18th in slugging percentage at .388.

The Rox have gone back to the way they played in 2021, where they didn’t give up a lot of runs… but they didn’t score many runs, either.

While this team has some good players, there’s just not enough production in the heart of the lineup – and I have to question Bud Black’s lineup management.

I don’t understand why Brendan Rodgers (a second baseman and a .252 hitter) is hitting 3rd, while Yonathan Daza (with a .331 average) is hitting sixth. Iglesias and Severn have averages above .300… and they’re hitting 7th and 9th.

Colorado Rockies vs San Diego Padres Prediction

San Diego is playing much better baseball than the Rockies, coming off a four game sweep of the Cubs in Wrigley Field.

The Rox pitching has improved, but they’ve made a lot of mistakes on the base paths and in the field the last several games.

The Padres pitching staff is as good if not better than Cleveland’s, and Colorado is in an offensive slump. As bad as they’re playing, the Rockies are due for a W eventually, but I don’t want to try and catch the proverbial “falling knife” (like the current Bitcoin trend).

This may be a slightly contrarian play, but I think the total is set too high at 12 5. That’s why I’ll take the full game under.

Prediction: Under 12.5 Total Runs Scored
