Tampa Bay Rays vs New York Yankees Analysis
The New York Yankees travel to Tropicana Field to begin a three game series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.
The Rays are on the skids as they have lost seven of their last nine games, including two of their last three in Baltimore against the Orioles. The Yankees fell just one run short of a sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams turn to their aces as Gerrit Cole gets the nod for New York and Shane McClanahan toes the rubber for Tampa Bay. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.
Rays Hope To Shine Through
The Tampa Bay Rays have hit a rough patch as they have lost seven of their last nine games, including a three game sweep at the hands of baseballs top team in the New York Yankees.
They ended up getting edged out 2-1 in Baltimore on Sunday against the Orioles. Corey Kluber pitched well enough to earn himself a victory with six innings of two run baseball.
However, his team gave him little to no run support and he wound up with his 4th loss of the season. Leadoff man Kevin Kiermaier went 2 for 5 with a couple of singles.
Offensive woes have been a major part of the Rays recent struggles as they scored three runs or less in 5 of their last 6 games. On the season they rank 25th in runs scored and 26th in OPS. It hasn’t helped that they are missing major bats in Wander Franco and Miguel Margot due to injury.
Pitching hasn’t been the issue for Tampa, especially for Mondays starter Shane McClanahan. They dominant southpaw is 7-3 with a miniscule 1.84 ERA and 0.86 WHIP.
McClanahan has been close to untouchable with seven straight quality starts dating back to early May.
Unstoppable Yankees
The New York Yankees continue to stack wins left and right regardless of competition. Their 49-17 record is hands down the best in the majors and they have a 10+ game lead on anyone in their division.
They fell only one run shy of another sweep as they fell 10-9 yesterday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Luis Severino fell short of expectations as he allowed five earned runs in only five innings.
The bullpen wasn’t much better as they allowed another five over the course of the final three innings. Gleyber Torres had himself a day with a 3 for 5 performance with a homerun and three RBI.
It’s almost goes without saying but the Bronx Bombers are elite across the board. They rank #1 in runs scored, OPS, runs allowed, opponent OPS and batting average.
Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will toe the rubber on Monday. He bounced back nicely after getting shelled in Minnesota with six shutout innings against tonight’s opponent. On the season, he is 6-1 with a 3.33 ERA across 73 innings of work.
Tampa Bay Rays vs New York Yankees Prediction
The New York Yankees are favored on a -135 money line, while the Tampa Bay Rays sit at +115 and a total of only 6.5. At first glance a total of only 6.5 catches your eye but it’s definitely warranted with these two starting pitchers.
McClanahan has been dynamite but he is a lefty that will have to deal with both Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. The Yankees are on a 16-2 including a sweep over Tampa last week.
Meanwhile the Rays are 2-7 in their last nine and they are struggling to score runs. There are some Rays hitters with excellent track records against Cole, however that wasn’t an issue last week.
It’s at the point where if you can get a decent line you take the Yankees and -135 works for me in this contest.
Prediction: New York Yankees -124
