Colorado Rockies vs San Diego Padres Analysis
The San Diego Padres are in Coors Field to play the Colorado Rockies in the third of a four game set. The visitors took Monday’s game and the home team won last night’s game by a count of 5-3.
San Diego Padres Betting Preview
The Padres are playing well even without Fernando Tatis Jr. with a record of 50-38, good for second in the NL West 8.5 games behind the Dodgers.
Pitching has been the secret to San Diego’s success with a 7th best team ERA at 3.66 and a 1.18 WHIP. The hitting has lagged behind, as they’re 21st in team OPS at .688 with a .240 team batting average.
Manager Bob Melvin has done a great job with this team, and should be in the running for NL Manager of the Year. And they’ve played well on the road, with a 27-19 record away from Petco Park.
Joe Musgrove is having an outstanding season, and should be one of the pitchers in next week’s All-Star Game. He’s 8-2 with a 2.09 ERA in 15 starts and 99 innings of work, with a 0.93 ERA and 98 strikeouts.
Java Joe has had one start versus the Rockies this year at home, where he went 6.0 shutout innings with eight strikeouts, four hits and two walks.
Colorado Rockies Betting Preview
Chad Kuhl has had a decent, yet unspectacular first season with the Colorado Rockies. In 16 starts and 87.1 innings, he has a 4.02 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP and 63 strikeouts.
He’s also allowed 33 walks and 10 home runs, just over three free passes and about one long fly per nine innings. Those are decent numbers when you pitch half your games at Coors Field.
The Rockies have been what we’d expect most nights with above-average hitting and run production at home, and mediocre pitching at almost every park. However, there are three big differences this season.
The first is a slightly above average home record of just 23-22, #2 is a lower-than-expected home run total of 81 (21st best in MLB) and #3, not as many games as you’d think that go over the run totals.
For the 2022 season to date, the Rockies games have been 41 overs, 41 unders and 5 pushes. This tells us the books have the run totals for Rockies games dialed in pretty well.
Mid-Season MLB Handicapping Tip
Every so often we need to check our assumptions and make sure they’re accurate, so we can make more profitable wagers. The three factors for the Rockies are good examples of this.
Although the Rox and Coors Field have the reputations of being a high-scoring team and park, it hasn’t always played out that way in 2022. The All-Star Break is a great time to reflect on your 1st half wagers to make sure your betting assumptions are still valid.
Colorado Rockies vs San Diego Padres Prediction
Although the Rockies hit southpaws better than righties, they’re still darn good against right-handers in the friendly confines of Coors Field with a 3rd best OPS.
Musgrove has only pitched at altitude twice in his career, with one good and one not-so-good start. This will be Kuhl’s first start versus the Padres this year, and he should be up for this matchup against San Diego’s ace.
I can see this game staying fairly close and low-scoring through at least five innings. That’s why I’ll take the 1st 5 innings under 6 totals runs scored, and even play it down to 5.5.
Prediction: 1st 5 Innings Under Total Runs Scored (6 or 5.5)
