Monaco vs PSV Analysis
PSV Eindhoven and Monaco will suit up for the third round of the Champions League qualifiers on Tuesday in the historic Stade Louis II in the principality as both sides look ahead to a standout season in Europe.
PSV had an excellent season last year overall, finishing as close runners-up to Ajax over in the Dutch Eredivisie and reaching the Europa Conference League quarter-finals also, eventually getting knocked out by two late Leicester goals over the final 15 minutes of play.
Monaco meanwhile crashed out in the Europa League Round of 16 against Braga but finished the domestic season in French Ligue 1 incredibly strong, ranking as the league’s best team from December 1st on, even over eventual champions PSG.
The two teams have faced off against one another four times over the last decade with Monaco winning two with two draws also and another close encounter is expected here on Tuesday as well.
Dutch Legend Van Nistelrooy Enjoys Hot Start In Charge Of PSV
New PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy enjoyed a hot start to his tenure in charge of PSV with a 5-3 Dutch Super Cup victory over arch-rivals Ajax at the weekend.
A hat-trick from Guus Til was enough to put PSV over the line in that one and former club and Dutch international legend van Nistelrooy will no doubt hope that’s a sign of things to come as they travel over to Monaco on Tuesday night looking to overturn the home side in Europe for the first time since 2005.
Monaco Strong At Home
With a record of 9-1-1 at home in league action going all the way back to December 1st, PSV should be under no illusions as to the size of the task that awaits them in trying to beat Monaco in their home stadium here.
Monaco have only lost one home league game since September 15th in French Ligue 1 and went undefeated at home throughout European competition last year as well, including against this same PSV side in Europa League Group B last season.
However, with just one over their last six pre-season friendlies, Monaco will need to pick up the pace quickly in this one if they’re going to secure a victory against PSV on Tuesday night.
Monaco vs PSV Prediction
Monaco started out last season in really poor form and it’s been an issue with this team for a number of seasons now, ranking all the way down in 12th position on November 1st in the 2020-21 season as well.
Those pre-season friendlies have highlighted that slow start to a season once again and while we won’t place too much emphasis on friendlies overall, losing 3-1 to Southampton in your previous game is hardly ideal preparation for a major European matchup.
PSV meanwhile are coming off a superb win over Ajax at the weekend and will be in high spirits coming into this one on Tuesday. Not only that, but PSV showed they are more than capable of coming here and getting a result also with last season’s 0-0 draw in Stade Louis II against Monaco in the Europa League being exhibit A.
PSV had more dangerous attacks than Monaco in that game (Eran Zahavi coming very close to scoring early in the second half) and had almost double the number of goal attempts over Monaco in that game as well.
We expect PSV to remain similarly competitive in this one and are taking them on the +0.5 handicap line on Tuesday to win and cover against Monaco over in the Champions League qualifiers.
Prediction: PSV +0.5 Goals
