Danny Jacobs vs John Ryder Analysis

It’s been almost three years since Danny Jacobs fought Canelo Alvarez for the unified middleweight championship over in Las Vegas.

Since then, ‘The Miracle Man’ has moved up to 168lbs to fight both Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Gabe Rosado, and frankly didn’t look great in either fight.

Jacobs struggled with a very lethargic JCC Jr. for large portions of their fight and many people felt he straight up lost the Gabe Rosado fight as well.

A lot of the issues surrounding Jacobs at super-middleweight seem to be him being a lot slower at the new weight than before, and lacking the size and power advantage he once enjoyed at 160.

John Ryder’s Late Career Surge

After a domestic level journeyman type career that lasted throughout most of the 2010’s, John Ryder has really been going through something of a late career renaissance in his 30’s.

After four losses on his career, Ryder went up against former WBSS candidate Jamie Cox in a make or break fight at domestic level for both men and managed to come through that one in style, stopping Cox early in the 2nd round.

After two subsequent stoppages, he finally had the highlight of his career so far, in what was an extremely controversial loss against former 168lb kingpin Callum Smith, a fight the vast majority of people felt he won.

Another victory here on Saturday night however in arguably the biggest fight of his career to date would cap off an amazing comeback from the former domestic level journeyman into a serious title contender at 168.

Danny Jacobs vs John Ryder Prediction

If this line had of been released three to four years ago, looking at a fighter in Danny Jacobs who arguably just came off beating GGG in their fight going up against a fighter in John Ryder who already had four domestic losses on his belt to the likes of Nick Blackwell and Jack Arnfield, you would be forgiven for thinking Danny Jacobs at a paltry -165 was the bet of the century, but a lot has changed since then.

Danny Jacobs’ move to super-middleweight hasn’t been without issue and he just doesn’t look like the same fighter he once was at middleweight.

Jacobs has chopped and changed trainers over the last few years, first leaving Andre Rozier to go to Fareed Samad, and then going back to Rozier with long periods of inactivity in between. And with each passing year Jacobs’ enthusiasm for the fight game seems to be diminished.

John Ryder on the other hand, while not anywhere near on the same level technically as Danny Jacobs, knows this is his moment, and his come forward pressure, sit on your chest kind of style will be well suited against a fighter in Jacobs who has lost a lot of movement over the last few years and simply looks unmotivated at this level.

Danny Jacobs has the ability to win this one with ease if he can channel that former outside game he possessed at 160, and which he used to great effect against the likes of GGG and Sergey Derevyanchenko, but that was a long time ago and we’re taking a shot with the much hungrier underdog this weekend to win on points in what would be a major upset this Saturday.

Take John Ryder to win on points at a healthy +230 as the boxing play for Saturday.
