David Benavidez vs Oleksandr Gvozdyk Betting Analysis
The ‘Mexican Monster’ David Benavidez returns to action on Saturday night over in Las Vegas as he takes on dangerous former champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk in a huge fight up in the light heavyweight division.
David Benavidez has been on a roll of seven stoppages across his last eight fights, with Caleb Plant being the lone blemish on that run, something he was extremely fortunate to do given the beating he took at the hands of Benavidez in that fight.
For Oleksandr Gvozdyk it’s less of a current run, and more of a potential return to form as he looks to scale the heights of the light heavyweight division once again after losing his WBC title to Artur Beterbiev back in 2019.
David Benavidez comes into this fight as the prohibitive -600 favorite, with Oleksandr Gvozdyk coming back at a +450.
No Canelo For Benavidez
In one of the most widely anticipated fights in recent memory, it doesn’t look at this time at least that we’ll get to see the all-Mexican war play out between David Benavidez and undisputed 168lb champion Canelo Alvarez any time soon.
Benavidez has clearly outgrown the super middleweight limit at this point and looks far more natural at his current weight of 175lb, a region that Canelo doesn’t look likely to go back to in the near future.
However, with the battle between undefeated Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol taking place later this year for divisional supremacy, Benavidez could well position himself for the winner of that bout with a comprehensive victory in this one.
Gvozdyk Looks To Become King Of The Castle Once Again
After a 17-0 start to his career, with 14 of those victories coming inside the distance as well, including a brutal KO of former champion Adonis Stevenson in Montreal, Oleksandr Gvozdyk was rightly hailed as the best light heavyweight on the planet this time five years ago, even going in as the slight favorite over Artur Beterbiev in their unification clash back in 2019.
But five years is a long time in boxing, and since his stoppage loss at the hands of Beterbiev in that fight, Gvozdyk has effectively been in the boxing wilderness, staying in retirement for almost three and a half years before making his comeback early last year.
Whether the old Gvozdyk is able to show up here or not is the open question, but if he can, then Benavidez really has his work cut for him in this one.
David Benavidez vs Oleksandr Gvozdyk Expert Prediction
As previously stated, the question in this fight all boils down to what version of Gvozdyk shows up here, and how much he has left in the tank at the grand old age of 37.
If he can get back to anywhere near his 2019 prime then he should arguably go in as the favorite here as he employs supreme distance control, fluid movement, and has pinpoint accuracy to boot, nevermind his substantial power, so all that combined would no doubt give Benavidez, who doesn’t have the greatest defense to begin with, some real issues in this fight.
However, if three and a half years of inactivity simply proves too much for Gvozdyk in this one and he appears like a faded force, then this fight likely ends in stoppage, as just like Artur Beterbiev was able to do to him, Benavidez will likely pressure Gvozdyk to the point of getting stopped in this fight.
This fight is being priced up as the latter however, so at the current odds, all the value lies in taking a shot on the original Gvozdyk to show up here, and he showed that he’s still got something left in the tank after stopping a very tough Ricards Bolotniks in Mexico last year.
David Benavidez vs Oleksandr Gvozdyk Prediction: Oleksandr Gvozdyk ML (+450)
