Two undefeated fighters will square off on the undercard of the Richardson Hitchins vs. Gustavo Lemos fight over in Las Vegas this Saturday night with young Mexican-American phenom Diego Pacheco looking to extend his 20-fight win streak with another victory against Shawn McCalman this weekend.

At just 23 years of age, Pacheco has been absolutely carving his way through the super-middleweight division recently, with a current 85% KO percentage and knocking off some solid names on the way in the likes of Jack Cullen and Marcelo Coceres also.

Shawn McCalman has perhaps been just shy of hitting that same bar across his career so far, but nevertheless has some recognizable names on his resume such as Vaughn Alexander and Marquis Moore, with seven of his 15 victories coming inside the distance.

Diego Pacheco comes into this fight as the massive -1600 favorite with Shawn McCalman coming back at a +900.

There’s no question Shawn McCalman is taking a huge step up in quality on Saturday night in facing Diego Pacheco.

McCalman is a mid-long range fighter who likes to work off the jab oftentimes, yet keeps his hands low, Roy Jones Jr. style, as he looks to jump in and out of range with that jumping straight right hand of his or a sudden uppercut, with the ability to switch hit as well.

That all sounds good on paper but against a fighter in Pacheco who will be so much taller than him come fight night, keeping your hands low and looking to rely solely off reflexes might be a recipe for disaster here as Pacheco will punish you if you can’t get out of range in time, something McCalman has been guilty of in the past against fighters such as Lorawnt T. Nelson, Kasimu Yakubu, among others.

Shawn McCalman is a solid fighter no question, but there’s little he brings to the table this weekend that Diego Pacheco hasn’t already seen, beaten, and stopped before in terms of styles.

We saw against Ricardo Adrian Luna for example in December of 2022 that Pacheco often primes himself to wait for that mid-range jab to get thrown, the most dangerous punch to throw in boxing as it can be countered so easily by high-level opponents, before then absolutely destroying his opponent with that massive overhand right of his.

The real danger of Pacheco however is that finishing instinct of his, able to immediately assault a hurt opponent with fast, vicious combinations to the head and body that almost always close the show.

I believe that’ll be the case once again this weekend with Pacheco proving far too much for McCalman in this one.
