Edgar Berlanga vs Jason Quigley Betting Analysis
Highly touted Puerto Rican prospect Edgar ‘The Chosen One’ Berlanga will make his Matchroom/DAZN debut this weekend against Ireland’s Jason Quigley in the Mecca of boxing Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Berlanga made a huge splash in the sport a couple of years ago after putting together 16 straight 1st round KOs across his first 16 pro fights, with former promoters Top Rank heavily hyping up Berlanga to quite possibly be the most dangerous man in the entire sport.
However, since his last 1st round KO back in December of 2020, Berlanga has gone to a decision four straight times, both ending his contract with Top Rank and taking a lot of the shine from his earlier knockout success streak as a result, something he aims to rectify this weekend against Jason Quigley.
Berlanga Looking For More Stability
While Edgar Berlanga will no doubt be looking to revive the momentum he put together earlier in his career, first and foremost it’s key he stabilizes himself under DAZN’s banner in order to build that momentum moving forward.
The Puerto Rican fighter is already incredibly popular across social media channels but has looked temperamental over his last few performances, with Marcelo Esteban Coceres putting him down hard back in 2021.
Berlanga then getting fined $10,000 with an additional six-month ban from the sport given by the NYSAC after trying to bite his previous opponent Alexis Angulo on the shoulder during their bout last July also.
Berlanga hasn’t boxed since then, and more than anything to do with regaining his impressive knockout streak or continuing to call out Canelo for a potential Mexico vs. Puerto Rico mega-fight, he needs to be in the right space mentally as over his last few fights to close out his Top Rank deal, the pressure looked to be getting the better of Berlanga in the ring, leading to sub-par performances as a result.
Quigley Looking For Redemption Of His Own
After a bright start to his own career under the Golden Boy promotional banner in the U.S., Jason ‘El Animal’ Quigley was projected for a big place in the sport after headlining a Golden Boy card back in 2017 against Glen Tapia.
Quigley took care of business in that fight, rocking Tapia multiple times early before injuring his right hand, and followed up that points decision win with three more victories before suffering a prolonged beating from Tureano Johnson in his next fight.
That loss effectively ended his career Stateside and Quigley has since switched his focus back to Ireland, putting together a few more good wins before getting blasted out in two rounds by a razor-sharp Demetrius Andrade in his last fight over in the U.S. back in November 2021.
Now with former world champion trainer Andy Lee in his corner, with Lee stating he felt the Andrade fight may have come a bit soon in their working relationship for Quigley to be at his best.
Quigley’s camp looks a lot more focused ahead of this one and the Donegal fighter is determined to prove he’s a lot better than what his performance against Andrade showed.
Edgar Berlanga vs Jason Quigley Expert Prediction
This is a dangerous fight for Edgar Berlanga no question on Saturday, and the odds appear extremely unjustified as a result.
Not only will Berlanga have been out of the ring for over a year now, coupled with the pressure of a massive make-or-break promotional debut with Matchroom also, but the fact is Quigley’s simply the better boxer of the two from a technical standpoint heading into this one, and that’s something that could prove extremely problematic for the heavily favored Puerto Rican fighter this weekend.
Jason Quigley has won three European gold medals for Ireland in the amateurs, including placing silver in the World Championships back in 2013 as well, and has only benefitted further from having Andy Lee in his corner across recent fights also.
However, the question remains whether Jason Quigley can sustain an aggressive start from Berlanga early on Saturday as he looked extremely vulnerable against Tureano Johnson in his first professional loss, and was simply unable to recover from an early onslaught against Demetrius Andrade also.
If Quigley can make it out of those opening few rounds this weekend however and frustrate Berlanga, I have no doubt he’s the better boxer fundamentally of the two in this one, and a points decision win for the Irish fighter would not shock me in the slightest on Saturday night.
No round prop odds or method of victory have been listed up at the time of writing, but if you’re playing this one on Saturday, there’s simply no value in taking the -1300 on offer with Edgar Berlanga here, and with Quigley already going off at a straight +700 for the upset, boost that mammoth line up even higher by putting some coffee money on a Jason Quigley points decision win this weekend over in the Big Apple.
Prediction: Jason Quigley +700 (or even better odds to win by decision)
